Making the jump from the high school level to the collegiate level is never easy, but for former Atchison Redmen Austin Bonnel the switch has been simple as he has helped the Coffeyville Community College baseball team off to a strong start to the 2019 season.
Bonnel, currently in his sophomore campaign, has shined this season as the team’s leadoff hitter posting an average of .263 with 20 RBI’s and 35 runs scored, which includes a Jayhawk Conference batting average of .281.
He also leads the team with 30 walks already this season which has led him to post an on base percentage of .442.
He has played in 40 of the Red Raven’s 41 games so far and has helped Coffeyville off to a 24-17 start which includes a 10-10 Jayhawk Conference record.
Bonnel comes from Atchison High School where he was named a first team Kansas City-Atchison League selection his senior season, a year in which he hit .471 with two home runs and 20 RBI’s.
He also posted a 1.63 earned run average on the mound for the Redmen, which included 50 strikeouts in just 30 innings of work.
Bonnel will look to continue his strong sophomore campaign in the final month as the Red Ravens inch closer to postseason play.
