Kansas All-Class Basketball Honors Handed Out

Basketball season is in the books and it was another solid year for the Northeast Kansas area as eight area teams made the state tournament with two teams capturing third place finishes, one a state runner-up finish and one other a state championship.

With the season in the books the All-Class and All-State honors have been handed out this season. Many area athletes earned honorable mention All-class honors this season, while a select few earned All-class first, second and third team honors. 

Starting off in Class 4A the Holton Wildcats highlight the All-class honors with junior, Kyrstie Miller earning first team honors from the Topeka Capital Journal and second team honors by Varsity Kansas. The junior as already verbally committed to play basketball at Emporia State and helped the Wildcats to a 21-2 season this year with their only two losses coming at the hands of the Class 4A champs, Wamego. Miller lead the team with 11.5 ppg while grabbing 6.4 rpg and posting 4.9 spg, 1.8 apg and 1 bpg. Wildcats continued their dominance in the Big Seven league winning their eighth straight league title.

Holton Wildcat senior, Trent Tanking earned third team honors by the Topeka Capital Journal while earning honorable mention honors by the Varsity Kansas. Tanking helped the Wildcats to a 17-5 record this year and for the second straight year shared the Big Seven league title with Nemaha Valley. Trent earned first team All Big Seven league honors while posting 13 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 2.3 apg 1.1 spg this season. Tanking capped off his athletic career as a Wildcat helping the football team capture a Class 4A state title this year and he looks to continue his football career next year at Kansas State as a walk-on.

Santa Fe Trail Charger senior, Holly Ullery was the only other area player to earn above honorable mention All-Class honors as she was named to the third team honors by the Topeka Capital Journal. Ullery helped the Chargers to 17-5 record this season while earning all league honors posting 12.2 ppg, 2.4 rpg and 1.5 spg this season.

In Class 3A it was Nemaha Valley Raider senior, Creighton Brinker highlighting things as he earned All-State honors by the Topeka Capital Journal and being named first team All-class by both the Capital Journal and Varsity Kansas. Brinker helped lead the Raiders to another top four finish in Class 3A at state as the Raiders finished 24-2 and third at state this season as co-Big Seven league champions. Creighton lead the Big Seven league with a 14.9 ppg average this year, grabbed 7.7 rpg and lead the league in blocks, also 3.1 bpg, earning him first team honors.

His teammate senior, Trent Olberding of the Raiders earned third team All-class 3A honors by the Topeka Capital Journal helping the Raiders to their great season. Olberding tallied 12.1 ppg while shooting 50% from the floor and 37% from three-point land, on his way to first team All Big Seven league honors.

Sabetha lady Bluejay, Ashley Annan garnered second team All-class honors by both Varsity Kansas and Topeka Capital Journal. Annan helped the Bluejays to a 17-7 record this season and an appearance in the Class 3A state tournament as they gave the eventual state champs, Burlington a run for their money in the first round action at state. Ashley earned first team All Big Seven league honors by leading the lead in scoring with 14.1 ppg and leading the league in field goal percentage, 58.4% while also grabbing 9 rpg. 

ACCHS Tiger seniors, Allison Wallisch and Jacob Hansen both also earned All-Class honors above honorable mention. Wallisch earned second team honors by Varsity Kansas and third team by the Topeka Capital Journal after helping led the Tigers to a 19-3 year. Allison who will be playing college basketball at Johnson County CC posting 13.8 ppg, 9.6 rpg, 2.6 spg and 1 apg this season on her way to her second straight first team All DVL honor.

Jacob Hansen, helped the Tigers dominate the DVL the last years finishing the regular season unbeaten the last two years and finishing this season 22-1 overall. Hansen like Wallisch earned first team All DVL honors for the second straight year as he posted 13.8 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 3 apg, 2.9 spg and 1.6 bpg.

In Class 2A, there was another area player earning All-State honors which is all classifications together that was Jefferson County North lady Charger junior, Jacee Kramer. Kramer posted nearly 600 points this season good for a 26 ppg average, while posting 4.9 rpg, 4.3 spg and 3.5 apg helping JCN to a state runner-up finish this season and a state title back in 2011 with her sister, Jordan. Kramer earned All DVL honors this season and looks to be dominant again next year after being first team All-class by both Varsity Kansas and Topeka Capital Journal.

JCN Chargers, Jacob GrandPre and Jamie Navinskey both earned All-Class second and third team honors, respectively form the Topeka Capital Journal. For the senior, GrandPre he helped the Chargers to the state tournament for the second straight year as the Chargers went 17-7 this season with the first team All DVL player. The junior, Navinskey also earned All DVL honors being a part of the dominant lady Charger teams over the last few years.

Two others from the area earned All-class honors above honorable mention honors in Class 2A, as Washington County senior, Megan Stegman earned second team honors by the Topeka Capital Journal and junior, Luke Burns of Valley Falls earned third team by the Capital Journal. Stegman helped lead her team to another sub-state championship game this year where their season ended for the second straight year, this season finishing 20-2. For Luke Burns he helped lead the Dragons to a 16-5 record this season in the DVL and earned all DVL honors this season.

In Class 1A, Axtell Eagle junior, Payton Heinen was the only area 1A player to earn All-class honors above honorable mention by both Varsity Kansas and Topeka Capital Journal earning second team honors by both outlets after helping the Eagles to a 19-8 season and a Class 1A-DII state title. Heinen posted an impressive state line of 15 ppg, 9.6 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.2 spg and 3.6 bpg. Heinen and company helped the Eagles to their first winning season since 1996. 

Centralia Panther junior, Sam Steinlage earned second team All-class honors from the Topeka Capital Journal after helping the Panthers to a 20-6 season and a third place finish in Class 1A-DI at state. Steinlage lead the Panthers this season with 15.1 ppg and 7.2 rpg on the floor leading a team that will be one of the favorites to make it back to the state tourney next year and make it to the state title game on the football field, too.

Frankfort Wildcat senior, Calahan Brown earned third team All-Class 1A by the Topeka Capital Journal after a year were he helped the Wildcats to a 14-8 record this season after winning the Class 1A-DII state title last year.

On the girls side, B&B lady Falcon junior, Laura Sudbeck earned third team All-class 1A by the Topeka Capital Journal after a season in which the lady Falcons went 20-4 winning sub-state and making the Class 1A-DII state tournament. Sudbeck posted a double almost every game this season finishing with an average of a double-double, 16.1 ppg and 10.7 rpg.

Many other area athletes earned honorable mention honors in their respective classifications and they are all listed below.
