59 Area Senior Athletes Showcased in Highland All-Star Games
By Mike Smith

Top seniors from all around Northeast Kansas and some others from across Kansas came together on Saturday to showcase their talents on the volleyball and basketball court and Ben Allen Fieldhouse at Highland Community College as part of Highland's 27th annual Northeast Kansas All-Star weekend.

The volleyball matchup featured 22 athletes and was a highly contest four set matchup, as Dexter Head Coach, Donna Fatout lead the Navy team and Valley Falls Head Coach, Lori Glissman lead the Gold team. Navy controlled the first set until team gold gathered the troops and rattled off a run to get back into the set and then ended the set scoring the final six tallies to win it 25-20. Navy responded with the next three sets as they took set two 25-19, dominated set three 25-11, going up 10-0 before team gold scored and winning set four 25-20. Team Navy was highlighted on the day by Pleasant Ridge's, Ashten Langley and Sabetha's, Kacey Reiger up front with their spikes landing for a multitude of spikes, while Dexter's Kaylie Berkley serving also was a big highlight with multiple service aces. For team Gold, they were lead by Frankfort's, Josie Hale who had a majority of their kills on the day while Valley Falls, Molly Tillery, ACCHS Tiger, Allison Wallisch and Holton's, Kara Decker had some nice plays, also.

Next up was the girls basketball matchup featuring 23 athletes (with three volleyball players playing in the basketball game); it was a tight ballgame but the Navy team came out on top 53-42. The Navy team was lead by Riverside Cyclones Head Coach, Bryan Adkins while Holton Wildcat Head Coach, Jon Holliday lead the Gold team. Balanced scoring throughout the contest with great team play by both teams as team Navy pushed out to a 24-17 lead at the half. For the Navy squad they were led by ACCHS Tiger, Allison Wallisch who was the only player in double figures for the game with 11 points, with Sabetha Bluejay, Ashley Annan chipped in nine points and all 11 players on the roster scoring. The Gold team was lead by seven points by Hanover Wildcat, Courtney Jueneman and Wetmore Cardinal, Dana Kramer. For, Gold 10 of their 12 players scored with Jeff West Tiger, Erika Essman and Troy Trojan, Paige Fenley just having some shots fall short.

In the boys basketball contest it was far more high scoring than the girls as team Gold took down team Navy 91-74. Team Gold was lead by Immaculata Head Coach, Michael Connelly, while team Navy was lead by Jefferson County north Head Coach, Jim Brickell. A barrage of three-pointers early by team Gold pushed them out to a lead that proved to be to much for team Navy to battle back from as it was 46-32 at the half. Four players finished the day in double figures for team Gold with McLouth Bulldog, Carter Gish leading the way with 18 points, while ACCHS Tiger, Jacob Hansen chipped in 15 points including three early three's and a pair of dunks. Holton Wildcats, Trent Tanking and Cameron Karn joined their gold teammates in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively. On the Navy side four players also tallied double figures, all from different leagues with Atchison Redman, Tyson Downing lead his team with 13 points, including a dunk. Wetmore Cardinal, Ross Boeckman and Sabetha Bluejay, McKenzie McAfee each chipped in 11 points, with Maur Hill-Mount Academy Raven, Brock Hanf adding 10 points.

Overall it was a great day and showcase of Northeast Kansas senior high school athletes and a great time for many of the kids to play one last time before college next year.
