Boys Class 3A Sub-State Championship Game at Sabetha

(5) Heritage Christian 63 (18-7)
(1) Hiawatha 55 (22-4)

The Hiawatha boys were looking for their first trip to the state tournament since 1974, but Friday night they were playing without their best player.

Braylen Siebenmorgen was injured in the semifinal game earlier in the week against Oskaloosa and his absence showed in the loss to Heritage Christian.

The Redhawks couldn't get much going on the offensive end in the first half as the Chargers would lead 12-7 after one and 24-18 at the break.

The Chargers would slowly build up the lead throughout the third quarter and would ultimately build a 16-point lead early in the fourth quarter.

The Redhawks would make a charge in the fourth quarter with an 11-0 run powered by Ethan Morton as they would get to within 51-46 with around three minutes left.

However, that is as close as the Redhawks would get the rest of the game as the Chargers were able to pull away with plenty of free throws down the stretch.

Morton scored 14 of his game-high 28 points in that fourth quarter burst for Hiawatha while Lane Kesler finished the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Siebenmorgen's 6'6 frame was missed on multiple fronts, especially in the rebounding numbers.

Heritage Christian would outrebound Hiawatha in the game 41-24.

The Chargers were powered by Landon Pittman who finished with 23 points and five rebounds. Trey Chambers finished with 15 points and six rebounds. The two forwards in Declan Schoff and Landon Eekhoff combined for 19 points and 23 rebounds.

Hiawatha put together one of their best seasons in some time as they won the Big East title which was their first league title since 2010.

The Hiawatha senior class featured Ethan Morton, Ethyn Grant, Karson Henry, Michael Jensen, Kenai Isaac, and Lane Kesler.
