Week 3 Games

Twin Valley League

(1-1) Valley Heights at (0-2) Doniphan West

Valley Heights managed to bounce back after their tough week one loss against Centralia by beating the Onaga Buffaloes last Friday, winning by a final score of 28-8. The Mustangs were down 8-7 after allowing a passing touchdown to Onaga with almost eight minutes left to go in the first half, but would buckle down and score the following twenty-one points of the contest. Valley Heights is one game away from tying up the all-time series against Onaga, while the Buffaloes still lead the all-time series 20-19.

The Doniphan West Mustangs drop to 0-2 after losing last week to the Pleasant Ridge Rams, a team that last year they had beaten twice in the season, picking up their two only wins of the year against. It is the first 0-2 start for Doniphan West since being 8-man in 2023.

Doniphan West is behind in the all-time series against Valley Heights, 2-7, with the last win for Doniphan West over Valley Heights coming in 2015. Valley Heights won last season 61-14.

Brandon’s Pick: Valley Heights
Justin’s Pick: Valley Heights
Kryndon’s Pick: Valley Heights
Jake’s Pick: Valley Heights
Boz’s Pick: Valley Heights

(1-1) Clifton-Clyde at (1-1) Linn

The Hanover Wildcats dominated Clifton Clyde Eagles last Friday by a score of 56-6, ending the game shortly into the third quarter after going into the half with a 50-6 lead over the Eagles. The Eagles allowed a touchdown before the end of the first half, allowing Braylen Meyn to snag a touchdown reception. Clifton Clyde’s offense was held in check, and their defense struggled, allowing the Wildcat offense to work with a lot of short fields.

Linn beat Blue Valley-Randolph 64-14 to bounce back after their week one loss to the Axtell Eagles. Linn ended the game in the third quarter as the Bulldogs led at halftime 44-14, taking no time to end the contest in the third. Last season, it was Blue Valley-Randolph who demolished Linn 54-28. The Rams are now just barely holding the edge on the all-time series, 10-8, over Linn.

The Clifton Clyde and Linn Twin Valley League rivalry has been completely one-sided since 2000, with the Eagles dominating the series 14-1 since the turn of the new era. The only win slipping in for the Bulldogs in that time came back in 2024, where Linn won 43-34.

Brandon’s Pick: Clifton-Clyde
Justin’s Pick: Clifton-Clyde
Kryndon’s Pick: Clifton-Clyde
Jake’s Pick: Linn
Boz’s Pick: Clifton-Clyde

(1-1) Washington County at (2-0) Hanover

After Washington County came off a tremendous week one victory, they were swiftly met with the best team in eight-man last week in Axtell and lost 48-0. The Tigers allowed over 294 passing yards to quarterback Wyatt Detweiler as well as five passing touchdowns. Washington County allowed sixteen points in the first quarter and then would let the Eagles pull it away in the second with thirty-two points. The loss handed Axtell their 54th consecutive win.

Hanover took care of business against Clifton-Clyde last Friday with a 56-6 win over the Eagles. The Wildcats led going into half 50-6 with a last-minute score by Braylen Meyn off a 25-yard reception. It didn’t take long for Hanover to end it with the mercy rule, and through the entire night dominated the Eagles' defense through short starting field position on offense.

Last season was the first meeting between Hanover and Washington County since 1982, when the Tigers won 20-0. However, last season, it didn’t go well for Washington County as Hanover ended the game at halftime 52-0.

Brandon’s Pick: Hanover
Justin’s Pick: Hanover
Kryndon’s Pick: Hanover
Jake’s Pick: Hanover
Boz’s Pick: Hanover

(1-1) Centralia at (1-1) Onaga (92.1 KMZA)

Centralia lost to the #7 team in class 2 in Missouri last week, the Mid-Buchanan Dragons, 49-13. Last season, Centralia lost to Mid-Buchanan 41-6 the year prior, and after the loss, Centralia would not lose another game until the Class 1A state championship game. Centralia allowed nine carries, 123 yards, and two touchdowns to Dragons running back Christopher Kowalewycz. The Panthers allowed Aiden Admire for the Dragons to have two receptions for 78 yards and two scores.

Onaga, after picking up their opening season victory, fell to a week two loss to Valley Heights 28-8. The Buffaloes now only lead the all-time series 20-19 over Valley Heights. The singular scoring play for the Buffaloes was a four-yard touchdown pass from Ryder Kolterman to Josh Daniels, which gave Onaga the lead 8-7 after completing the 2-point conversion halfway through the second quarter. Kolterman threw for 111 yards in the game and rushed for another 84 yards.

The Centralia Panthers currently dominate the all-time series versus Onaga, 29-12. The Panthers have won 22 games straight against Onaga, having not lost since 1998.

Brandon’s Pick: Centralia
Justin’s Pick: Centralia
Kryndon’s Pick:
Jake’s Pick: Centralia
Boz’s Pick: Centralia

Big East League

(1-1) Hiawatha at (2-0) Sabetha (Sabetha & Hiawatha Channels)

The Redhawks captured their first win of the season in week two defeating Marysville at home 35-16. They jumped out to an early 7-0 first quarter lead and extended that out to 21-8 at halftime. Ethan Morton rushed for 171 yards and one touchdown while averaging over 10 yards per carry. Gus Smith added 135 rushing yards on just six carries and one score, and Karson Henry found the endzone and added 29 rushing yards.

Sabetha’s defense has looked good in the first two weeks as they improved to 2-0 last Friday night with a 34-7 win at Perry-Lecompton. The Kaws scored first but Sabetha dominated the rest of the way, scoring 34 unanswered points. The Bluejays defense is surrendering just over 11 points per game through the first two.

Dating back to 2005, Sabetha is 13-5 against Hiawatha and have won nine straight in the series. Last season the Bluejays won 35-0 with Hiawatha’s last win against the Bluejays being 28-7 back in 2013.

Brandon’s Pick: Sabetha

Kryndon’s Pick: Hiawatha
Jake’s Pick: Sabetha
Boz’s Pick: Sabetha

(1-1) Royal Valley at (1-1) Holton (103.9 KNZA & Holton Channel)

Holton put together an offensive explosion in week two rushing for 537 yards on 66 carries and showcasing a trio of impressive rushers in their 47-36 win against Riley County. Andrew Shupe had 176 yards while QB Alec Frazier had 136 and fullback Cael Frazier ran for 122. Holton never trailed in getting their first win of the season and has another home game against Big East and Jackson County foe Royal Valley this week.

Royal Valley lost their first game of the season in week two against Jefferson West 35-20 to fall to 1-1. The Panthers offense would outgain the Tigers and they’ve done that in both games this season against their opponents. Defensively they held Jefferson West to 127 passing yards and 102 rushing yards on 4.4 yards per carry.

Holton has beat Royal Valley 29 straight times including last season 32-14. The last time the Panthers beat the Wildcats was 37-28 back in 1996, which was the first game for Holton head coach Brooks Barta.

Brandon’s Pick: Holton

Kryndon’s Pick: Holton
Jake’s Pick: Holton
Boz’s Pick: Holton

Carter Hajek finished with 25 carries for 265 yards and four touchdowns while Sullivan Haverkamp added a 35-yard pick-six in the fourth quarter. Jake’s Pick: Jefferson West

(0-2) Perry-Lecompton at (0-2) Silver Lake (Silver Lake Channel)

Perry-Lecompton’s slow start to 2025 continued in week two as they lost against Sabetha 34-7. The Kaws scored the first touchdown of the game but surrendered 34 unanswered points. Garrett Metcalfe completed 9-of-15 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. Kaden Baker caught the touchdown and finished the game with five receptions for 74 yards.

After dropping a heartbreaker in the War on 24 in week one to Rossville in overtime, the Eagles followed that up by getting blasted at Nemaha Central last Friday 42-7. They were down 28-0 at halftime and scored their only touchdown in the third quarter on a fourth down play inside the NC 10-yard line.

Justin’s Pick: Silver Lake
Kryndon’s Pick: Silver Lake
Jake’s Pick: Silver Lake
Boz’s Pick: Silver Lake

Northeast Kansas League

(0-2) Horton at (2-0) Jackson Heights (Cobra Channel)

Through two games now, the Horton Chargers have yet to find the end zone, as last week they were once again shut out by a league opponent, this time giving up 48 points in a 48-0 loss to Jefferson County North. It was back in 2018; the last time the Chargers would start a season losing their first two games and scoring no points. That year Horton finished 0-9 and was handed their first loss of that year by Jackson Heights 42-0. Horton hasn’t scored more than a single touchdown against the Cobras since 2017.

Jackson Heights rolled through their week two opponent in the Maur Hill Mount Academy Ravens 69-6, scoring the most in a single game since the 2002 season, when the Cobras beat McLouth 71-6. The Cobras were up already 61-6 by the end of the first half, installing the running clock with about four minutes left to go in the second quarter. Drake Mellies led the day with five total touchdowns, with two rushing scores and three passing touchdowns. All of Mellie’s touchdown receptions were caught by Austin Zeller. The Cobra offense saw six different players enter the red zone. Jackson Heights leads the all-time series versus Maur Hill 9-5. The Cobras are now the #1-ranked team according to K-Preps in Kansas.

Horton trails the series 14-4 since 2004 against Jackson Heights, having lost nine straight in a row. Jackson Heights has also held the Chargers to 10 or fewer points in six straight meetings. The Cobras beat Horton last year 53-0.

(1-1) Riverside at (0-2) McLouth

This will be just the third all-time meeting between the Cyclones and Bulldogs with Riverside winning both matchups. The final last season was 34-14 while the final from 2021 was also 34-14.

Brandon’s Pick: Riverside
Justin’s Pick: Riverside
Kryndon’s Pick: Riverside
Jake’s Pick: Riverside

Non-League Games

(1-1) Chase County at (2-0) Axtell

The Chase County Bulldogs lost in a shootout to the Kiowa County Mavericks last Friday by a score of 70-50. The loss was still a massive improvement for the Bulldogs as the week prior in their opening game of the season, Chase County lost 50-0 to Little River on the road. This is the first time starting 0-2 in a season for Chase County since 2018, when they finished 1-8.

The #1 team in 8M-ll football in Kansas, Axtell, destroyed Washington County in a halftime concluder 48-0. Axtell quarterback Wyatt Detweiler completed 16-of-20 passes for 294 yards and five touchdowns. Landon Schmitz had seven receptions for 146 yards and two scores, while Joe Lybarger had four receptions for 94 yards and three touchdowns. This is the 54th consecutive win for Axtell. More impressively, the Eagles did not attempt a single pass in their week one game. Last week, they showed they were more than capable of going in the air as well.

Last season was the first ever meeting between Axtell and Chase County, but the Bulldogs would like to forget it as they were destroyed 46-0, with the match-up ending at halftime.

Brandon’s Pick: Axtell
Justin’s Pick: Axtell
Kryndon’s Pick: Axtell
Jake’s Pick: Axtell
Boz’s Pick: Axtell

Matt Hamm-Jones rushed for 140 yards on twenty carries for his first 100-yard rushing game this season. Aiden Shepard rushed for three scores for 64 yards as well. In total, Solomon had 399 yards of offense in their win over the Bombers.

Frankfort lost 54-44 against Lyndon and has surprisingly dropped their first two games of the season by close scores. Lyndon led the scoring by halftime, 36-22, and 48-22 going into the fourth. Frankfort would score 22 points in the final quarter but would come up short in the end. Wes Anderson had 92 yards rushing for a touchdown to lead the Wildcats on the ground and threw for another 127 yards for three more scores. Porter Colvin caught two of Anderson’s touchdown passes, while Henry Ketter received the other one.

The Frankfort Wildcats lead the all-time series against Solomon 5-2 with a three-game winning streak, and before winning 76-0 last year, the two teams hadn’t connected since 2007.

Brandon’s Pick: Frankfort
Justin’s Pick: Frankfort
Kryndon’s Pick: Frankfort
Jake’s Pick: Frankfort
Boz’s Pick: Frankfort

(0-2) Blue Valley-Randolph at (1-2) KC East Christian

2025 has been a complete flip for Blue Valley Randolph, as last year they started 2-0 and now they start 0-2 against the same teams. Last week, the Rams lost to Linn 64-14 in a one-sided match-up. The Rams let Linn end the game by the third quarter, as Linn was already leading by halftime 44-14, swiftly ending the contest in the third quarter. Last season, Linn fell to defeat 54-28 against Blue Valley Randolph. Blue Valley now barely holds onto the all-time series lead, just 10-8.

The KC East Christian Lions lost to the Wichita Defenders 48-16. The Lions went down early in the first quarter, 12-0, and trailed 14-0 at the end of the first half. The Defenders would score 22 points in the third quarter, while the Lions would find their first touchdown, converting the two-point conversion. KC East Christian tacked on one last score in the final quarter for themselves but would allow two more touchdowns to come through from the Defenders.

Last season was the first all-time between the Blue Valley-Randolph and KC East Christian. The Blue Valley Rams won 30-0, one of just two shutout victories they had last season.

Brandon’s Pick: KC East Christian
Justin’s Pick: KC East Christian
Kryndon’s Pick: Blue Valley-Randolph
Jake’s Pick: KC East Christian
Boz’s Pick: KC East Christian

(1-1) Maranatha at (0-2) Maur Hill-Mount Academy

After winning at KC Harmon 6-0 in week one, Maranatha followed that up in week two with a 14-6 loss at home against Uniontown.

Maur Hill-Mount Academy have arguably played the two best teams in the NEKL through the first two weeks of 2025. After being shut out 40-0 in the opener against Jefferson County North, they followed that up with their first home game in week two which was a 69-6 loss to defending champs Jackson Heights. The lone Ravens score in the game was in the second quarter on a 72-yard pass from Zaedyn Harper to Jayce Campbell.

The Ravens have dominated the last two meetings against Maranatha winning the game last season 65-12 while also getting a big win in 2017 by a final score of 51-12.

Brandon’s Pick: Maur Hill-Mount Academy
Justin’s Pick: Maranatha
Kryndon’s Pick: Maranatha
Jake’s Pick: Maranatha
Boz’s Pick: Maranatha

(0-2) Riley County at (0-2) Chapman

Despite both teams being 0-2, both have done some good things and played well against tough opponents the first couple weeks of 2025. Following a one-point loss to Jeff West in week one, Riley County fell at Holton 47-36 last Friday but gained 444 total yards of offense. Junior QB Kadrick Woodard ran for 88 yards and was 16-26 passing for 274 yards.

But even without a turnover and only three penalties, the Falcon defense could not stop Holton or find a way to get a lead in that matchup. Trey Weber had 106 yards receiving while Brendon Woodard added 80 and both had five receptions while Rielyn Wurtz added 85 yards on the ground. The Falcons are looking to get on track as last year they came into this game 2-0 and then beat Chapman 28-22.

The Irish have already had a pair of close games this season but come up short against Smith Center 16-6 and Abilene 16-12 in Coach Jason Grider's second year in Chapman.

Brandon’s Pick: Riley County
Justin’s Pick: Riley County
Kryndon’s Pick: Riley County
Jake’s Pick: Riley County
Boz’s Pick: Riley County
