Centralia Dominates at League Opening Triangular over Doniphan West and Frankfort

The Frankfort Wildcats, Centralia Panthers, and Doniphan West Mustangs played in a TVL opening season triangular at Doniphan West. Centralia, however, had already gotten its feet wet with a volleyball tournament up at Wabaunsee, where they would finish 4-1. This Triangular would be the first bit of action of the season for both the Mustangs and Wildcats.

Doniphan West over Frankfort (25-15, 25-8)

In the first set, it was a close 10-8 game at the beginning with the Mustangs holding the lead, but the hammer would then hit the nail as Doniphan West would go on to score thirteen straight points behind Belle Smith's back serving, who finessed three aces in the scoring run. Frankfort would attempt a late comeback with seven straight points, but the door would soon close with the 25-15 set victory for Doniphan West. 

In the second set, it was all Doniphan West as the Mustangs would dominate the Wildcats to a 25-8 set finish. Having scored sixteen out of the last twenty points scored in the set. Frankfort would struggle with attack errors and service errors, but did find a couple of solid kills from Tessa Parthemer and Ainsley Adams in the late set.

Doniphan West finished with thirteen kills, ten aces, and one block. With Kayte Falk leading the charge with five kills against Frankfort. Kya Keller had three kills and two aces, while both Belle Smith and Courtney Johnson had three aces apiece. 

Centralia over Frankfort (25-19, 25-19)

Centralia took an early 6-1 lead in set one, but Frankfort would make a swift and early comeback to take the lead 7-6. Frankfort would take twelve out of fourteen straight points in their comeback rally, taking a 13-9 advantage over the Panthers. Centralia, however, would get back on its feet quickly and go on a seven-point burst to take the lead, and go on to finish the set victorious 25-19. 

The second set was back and forth between both teams, with Centralia finally pulling away at 14-14, going on to score five straight to take the lead 19-14. Centralia would finally pull things together with some strong hits off Malayna Becker, Hayden Kramer, and Josie Haverkamp to finish out set two 25-19. 

Centralia finished with twenty kills, six aces, and one block. Becker led with nine kills against Frankfort, Kramer had three kills and three aces, Haverkamp put down three kills and a block, and upcoming star freshman Carlie Stienlage had three kills to contribute as well. The Panthers also did not allow a single ace from Frankfort.

Centralia over Doniphan West (25-21, 25-18)

In the most anticipated match-up of the night, with two teams that went to state a year ago, Centralia and Doniphan West would start set one with close-knit scoring. Compared to the previous two matchups, this matchup was cleaner with fewer errors and more kills. Courtney Johnson did a tremendous job setting up attacks for the Mustangs, helping Falk and Keller add onto their dominating night, but Centralia would squeeze out set one 25-21 with some late contributions from Malayna Becker and Hayden Kramer. 

Set two would go a little smoother for Centralia, starting early up 11-4. Doniphan West would get it close to 14-10, but then Centralia would take off again to soar up 17-10. After a timeout, the Mustangs would get to their last closest score of 17-14, but would fall in the end with the Panthers running away with a 25-18 victory to take the match. 

Centralia finished with an impressive twenty-three kills, two aces, and three blocks against the Mustangs. Hayden Kramer would lead in kills against Frankfort with six, Haverkamp quickly behind with four kills and two blocks.

Summary

Junior Malayna Becker had the most impressive night at the league triangular, having fourteen total kills, one block, and an ace. Becker also played great all around the court and set up her teammates. 

Frankfort starts now 0-2 on the season, while Doniphan West will begin 1-1. The #2 team in class 1A Division 1, Centralia, improves to 6-1 on the season.
