The Onaga softball team capped off the best season in school history with a third place finish at the Class 2-1A State Tournament in Pratt on Friday.

Semifinal: (2) Cedar Vale/Dexter 5, (3) Onaga 4 (8 innings)

It was a great game between the Spartans and Buffaloes that produced an absolutely wild finish. Cedar Vale/Dexter scored three runs in the first three innings to take an early 3-0 advantage.

They got an RBI single from Micah Brown in the second inning and then would add a two RBI single from Kendall Ghram in the third inning.

Onaga's offense couldn't get much going early as they didn't have a hit until the fifth inning. They got an RBI single from Marissa Sauvage and then tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth with an RBI double from Jadyn Haskin and an RBI single from Bridgett Campbell.

Both teams went scoreless in the seventh inning and extra innings were needed to decide a winner. The Buffaloes would take a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth inning on a bunt from Makenzie Dorsey that featured a throwing error, an umpire falling down, and a play at the plate.

The home plate umpire that fell down did not see the play at home but Campbell was announced safe and Onaga was three outs away from the State Title game.

The Spartans would rally to win the game in the bottom half of the inning scoring two runs on what was a groundout to the shortstop. With runners at second and third, Kylee Bragg hit a grounder to the shortstop which drove in the tying run along with the winning run.

Consolation Final: (3) Onaga 10, (4) Inman 3

After the tough defeat in the semifinal game the Buffaloes wasted no time taking out their frustrations on Inman in the consolation game scoring eight runs on seven hits in the first inning.

They would get RBI at-bats in the inning from Addison Dechant, Bridgett Campbell, Makenzie Dorsey, Annie Force, and Willow Hochstedler.

The game was 8-0 Onaga until the sixth inning and then Inman would make it interesting by getting three runs on the board on four hits with RBI's from Marlee Ballard, Lyla Levin, and Allsion Schrag.

The Buffaloes followed with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two RBI single from Hayden Kuhlman to make it 10-3 and that score would hold the rest of the way.

Hochstedler pitched all eight innings in the loss to Cedar Vale/Dexter striking out 11. She would pitch five plus innings in the game against Inman and would add 11 more strikeouts.

It was the first trip to the State Tournament in school history for Onaga softball and it will go down as the best season in school history with a third place finish at state and a record of 21-5, along with winning the Twin Valley League title during the regular season.
