The Onaga softball advanced to the semifinals of the Class 2-1A State Tournament in Pratt with a 5-2 win over Central Heights in the opening round on Thursday night.

The win is arguably the biggest in school history as it's the first ever appearance in the State Tournament for the program.

The Vikings (16-10) scored the first run of the game in the top of the first on an interferance call against the Onaga defense.

The Buffaloes (20-4) bounced back as they tied the game in the bottom of the third inning as Emmarsyn Fordham would score on a wild pitch after leading off the inning with a walk.

The difference in the game was in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Onaga bats would come alive with four runs scored all with two outs. It started with an RBI single by Annie Force, Willow Hochstedler followed with an RBI triple, and the highlight was a two-run home run by Addison Dechant.

Central Heights would get one run back on an error in the sixth but it wasn't enough to complete a comeback. Bridgett Campbell pitched six innings for Onaga and struck out nine while Hochstedler struck out the side in the seventh inning to earn the save.

Up next for Onaga will be a matchup against two-seed Dexter/Cedar Vale on Friday afternoon at 1:00 PM in Pratt with a trip to the State Championship on the line. Coverage will be live on 92.1 FM KMZA
