Holton Sweeps Sabetha to Earn Big 7 Titles

 It came down to the fourth quarter on both Big 7 games to end the regular season.  The Holton Wildcats would earn a sweep and both claim another League Title.  For the Holton girls, it was their 112th straight league win and finished an 8th consecutive Big 7 undefeated title.  The Holton boys earned a share of the Big 7 title for a fourth straight season finishing 13-1 and tied with Nemaha Valley a top the final standings.

GIRLS: Holton 43, Sabetha 38
Holton jumped to a 15-10 advantage but trailed 24-18 at halftime after scoring only three points in the second quarter.  The Wildcats were still behind 32-30 entering the fourth quarter and didn't take their initial second half lead until 2:47 to go when Kyrstie Miller converted a three-point-play to make it 36-35.  Holton made their final 8 free throws of the game to win their 19th straight game this season (19-1).  Miller scored 18 points for the Wildcats who made 16 of 27 free throws on the night in winning their third single digit game of the year.  Sabetha was lead by Ashley Annan with 16 points and 6-6 free throws but had 20 turnovers.  Alexis McAfee scored 8 of her 9 in the first half before Sabetha was outscored 25-14 in the final two quarters.  The Bluejays finish 10-4 in the Big 7 League and 14-6 overall as a #3 seed, they will host Pleasant Ridge to begin the Hiawatha Class 3A Sub-State.  Holton is the #2 seed (behind Wamego) and will host Royal Valley to begin there 4A Hayden Sub-State and quest for a 7th straight trip to state in Salina.

BOYS: Holton 52, Sabetha 39
This game also came down to the final quarter as Holton led 36-34 entering the final frame.  The Wildcats won the final stretch 16-5 and hit 12 of 13 free throws to secure a 9th straight win to end the regular season.  Ty Burdiek had 14 points while Trent Tanking scored 10 of his 12 in the second quarter and a steal and layout by Tanking put Holton ahead 23-21 at the half.  Garrett Beecher added 9 and Ryan Haefke scored 8 for the Cats who are 16-4 as the #4 seed, they will host Hayden to begin 4A Sub-State on Monday.  McKenzie McAfee scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half for the Bluejays while Gaven Schumann scored all 11 of his in the third quarter.  Sabetha's first loss in 7 games leaves them at 13-7 overall and 10-4 in the Big 7, with a home 3A Sub-State game Tuesday against either #6 seed Horton or #5 Riverside depending on a coin-flip.
