58 Area Wrestlers Punch Their Ticket to State with 11 Capturing Regional Titles

A bid to the state tournament and Regional championship was in the eyes of many area wrestlers over the weekend. This year in the Class of 4A and 3-2-1A a total of 58 area wrestlers will be competing at state after a top four finish in their weight class at Regionals, while 11 area wrestlers captured the Regional titles. While one area team captured a Regional championship and two others took home second places in their Regional.

In Class 4A teams and wrestlers from the area competed in two different Regionals with success for area teams come in both. In the Abilene Regional it was the Holton Wildcats highlighting the tournament with nine state qualifiers, including two Regional champions. Lucas Lovvorn (138lbs) and Lane Lassiter (145lbs) both finished off the day perfect in action winning their weight classes. Lovvorn won his final match via a 10-8 decision, while Lassiter won his final with a 7-3 decision.

Wildcats had three players take home second place finishes with Justin Pool (113lbs), Hunter Price (120lbs) and Andrew Rieschick (160lbs) walking away with second place finishes. Four more Holton Wildcats punched tickets to the state tournament earning third place performances, bouncing back after a loss at the Regional tournament. Jonah Lutz (126lbs), Justin Rieschick (132lbs), Mason Baum (152lbs) and Cooper Zeller (285lbs) all captured third place finishes over the weekend.

Royal Valley joined Holton at the Abilene Regional and four Panthers will be headed to state. The weekends action for the Panthers was highlighted by Tanner Ogden who continued his great season capturing the Regional title at 152lbs with a 4-0 day. His teammates, Christian Ogden (170lbs), Tristen Ogden (182lbs) and Bryce Golightley (145lbs) will be joining Tanner at state after their top four performances at Regionals. Christian finished second in his weight class, while Tristen took third and Bryce grabbed a fourth place finish.

As teams Holton finished second place at Regionals and Royal Valley took home a seventh place finish out of 15 schools competing.

In the Class 4A Tonganoxie Regional, 11 area wrestlers will be going to state. The Tigers of Jeff West highlighted the days action for the area teams with Justin Scott (220lbs) continuing his unbeaten season winning his weight class, taking the Regional championship for the second straight year. Fellow ranked Tiger wrestler, Tucker Schreiner finished the day with a second place finish on the day in the 106lbs weight class and Nate Holloman (120lbs) placed third, while two other Tigers took home fourth place finishes. Drake Byrd (182lbs) and Josiah Dowding (160lbs) both earned state bids with fourth place finishes for the Tigers.

Atchison, Perry Lecompton and Santa Fe Trail all had wrestlers register top four finishes on the day. The Redmen on the day were lead by three wrestlers earning state bids with Tyler Harris (160lbs) taking home a second place finish, Andrew Adrian (113lbs) taking third and Jeff Wallingford (126lbs) earning fourth place. For the Chargers it was Zac West (113lbs) and Andy Dennison (132lbs) both taking home fourth place finishes. Perry Lecompton had one wrestler qualify for state as Brendan Neal (285lbs) took home second place in his weight class.

Both the Jeff West Tigers and Atchison Redmen earned top 10 team performances with the Tigers finishing sixth as a team and the Redmen taking eighth.

In Class 3-2-1A, 34 wrestlers qualified for state with top four performances as seven area wrestlers captured Regional titles.

Marysville lead the way for area individual performances with three Regional champions. The Bulldog ranked trio of Chris Deters (106lbs), Josh Goepfert (113lbs) and James Landoll (138lbs) all finished with perfect days and Regional championships. Three other Marysville grapplers will also be headed to state with Mikah Nietfeld (170lbs) taking home a second place finish while Tim Cramer (152lbs) and Josh Nelson (160lbs) both took home third. Marysville with their performances took home second as a team.

ACCHS Tigers had the best team performance on the night taking home the Regional championship as a squad. Tigers were lead by one individual championship with Willy Dieckmann (126lbs) finishing off his day perfect and winning his weight classes. Joining Dieckmann at state for the Tigers will be Logan Bowen (120lbs), Scott Brikinsha (152lbs), Taylor Schuetz (160lbs), Jared Hoffman (285lbs) who all registered second place finishes for the Tigers.

The other three top performers on the day all came from different schools with Centralia and Horton individual champions that only state wrestler from those schools. For the Panthers, Andrew Beck qualified for state after taking down the competition in the 132lbs weight class and winning the title. Horton's, Little Bear Johnson continued his solid season with a Regional championship in the 220lbs weight class. Pleasant Ridge's, Jared Johnson earned the other Regional championship in the 170lbs weight class while his teammate, Clayton Gum (106lbs) took home a second place finish.

Sabetha, Onaga, Riverside, Oskaloosa, Doniphan West and Maur Hill-Mount Academy all finished the weekend with multiple wrestlers earning spots in the state tournament. For the Bluejays it was Tyler Edelman (220lbs), Isaac Wenger (195lbs) and Levi Huneke (182lbs) all earning second place finishes, while Jacob Leuthold (285lbs) added a fourth place finish. For the Buffaloes five wrestlers are going to state with tandem earning third places and three fourth place finishes. Mychal Kolterman (285lbs) and Dalton Blow (170lbs) both took home third place finishes, while Matt Marten (220lbs), Dustin Blow (195lbs) and Jonathan Fairbanks all placed fourth.

For the Cyclones of Riverside it was Cody Walker (220lbs) and Sheldon Harris (113lbs) highlighting things with a third place form Walker and fourth place for Harris. The Bears also had a fourth and third place finisher on the day with Mark Nickels (120lbs) taking fourth and Dusty Bammes (138lbs) finishing third. Mustangs saw Hunter Idol (106lbs), Garret Dunlap (145lbs) and Tristen Speer (195lbs) all took a third place finishes, while Trevor Fee (152lbs) finished fourth. For the Ravens of Maur Hill Cody Calhoon (132lbs) took home a second place finish.

All 57 state qualifying wrestlers now turn their attention to the state tournament this coming weekend Friday February 22nd and Saturday February 23rd. Listen to 103.9 KNZA on Friday and Saturday throughout the day for reports on the action.
