Sabetha Basketball Sweeps Panthers
By Justin Fluke

Both Sabetha teams improved to 9-3 in the Big 7 League with home wins on Tuesday night against Royal Valley.  The Bluejays had swept Royal Valley in Hoyt less than two weeks ago and came away with another pair of wins to keep momentum.  The Sabetha boys have won five straight games while the Lady Jays have now won five of their last six.

GIRLS: Sabetha 43, Royal Valley 24
Sabetha only led 13-11 early in the second quarter before closing the half on an 11-0 run to led 24-11 at the break.  Alexis McAfee was outstanding in the first half scoring 14 of her game high 17 points.  McAfee hit a pair of treys and also was 5 of 5 at the foul-line with a handful of rebounds and a few steals and assists to earn "Player to Bank On" honors from Citizens State Bank and Trust Company of Hiawatha.  Ashley Annan just missed a double-double with 9 points as Sabetha improved to 13-5 and also got a long shot just inside half-court to count by Brianna Gruber to end the game.  Royal Valley was plagued by 22 turnovers and got 7 points from Jaycee Worrell.  It was the first loss for RV in three games as they are now 3-9 in the league and 6-12 overall.

BOYS: Sabetha 39, Royal Valley 35
A much closer contest as neither team led by more than 7 points in the game.  Royal Valley was up 18-11 in the second quarter before Sabetha took a 23-21 advantage at the intermission.  The Bluejays never trailed again and hit five free-throws down the stretch to hold on for a fifth consecutive win.  Gaven Schumann, McKenzie McAfee and Jacob Frey all had 10 points for the Bluejays and Frey made big foul-shots to help seal the win while also grabbing a few steals and assists and controlling the Sabetha offense that only had 10 turnovers for the game.  Royal Valley got 10 points off the bench from Skyler Link but the Panthers missed a three-pointer to tie the game with under :10 to play.  Royal Valley is now 9-9 on the year and 4-8 in Big 7 play while Sabetha improved to 12-6 on the season.

Both teams have two games remaining.  Royal Valley is home versus Nemaha Valley Friday and then at Jeff West while Sabetha had a trip to Jeff West this Friday and then host Holton on Tuesday, February 19th in a double-header live on KNZA 103.9 FM and online at www.mscsports.net
