Wild Series Against Orioles Should Give Royals Fans Optimism About Their Offense

Two more series for the Kansas City Royals, two more times they leave with just one win each. They lost three of four starting last Thursday (I talked about last Thursday’s performance in last week’s Royals Review) and followed that up by losing two out of three at home to the Baltimore Orioles in a wild series.

Their comeback last Friday came up just short with an 8-6 loss. Minnesota’s offense jumped on Jordan Lyles getting seven hits and seven runs in the first five innings.

The Royals would respond with a solo shot to center field by Salvador Perez and an RBI single by Nick Pratto in the sixth inning. Then, they would get an RBI groundout by Bobby Witt Jr. and an RBI single by Salvy in the seventh, but all to no avail.

They were, however, able to complete the comeback on last Saturday’s 3-2 victory with a great start from Brad Keller, good relief pitching from their bullpen and offense coming at the right time.

Keller was able to go 5.1 innings while giving up six hits and five walks, but he only allowed one run.

After surrendering a home run to Byron Buxton in the seventh inning, Salvy came up clutch with an RBI single to tie the game in the eighth inning. It was a wild pitch by Jhoan Duran in the top of the ninth that allowed Edward Olivares to score to give them the lead and the win.

On Sunday, Sonny Gray put on a clinic for the Twins. On top of that, Minnesota put up a seven-spot to not allow Kansas City to get any sort of momentum. They finished their road trip losing the series finale 8-4.

The calendar turned to May, and it was time for Kansas City to play in front of their home crowd after being on the road for the past week-and-a-half.

Unfortunately, it would be their 13th home loss of the season with an 11-7 series opening loss on Tuesday evening against the Baltimore Orioles which entered the series with a record of 19-9.

The Royals gave Ryan Yarbrough the nod and he was perfect the first time through the hitting order. He retired the first ten batters, including striking out the first five.

The offense for the Royals got off to a nice start too with a couple of homers in the first inning from Witt Jr. and MJ Melendez to go up 3-0.

However, the O’s would quickly figure out Yarbrough as they proceeded to put up a five-spot in the fourth inning. The bullpen wouldn’t be much help either as they gave up five more runs in the next two innings to get KC down 10-3.

The Royals fought back with a solo shot from Salvy in the sixth inning. They also got three more runs in the seventh with Vinnie Pasquantino hitting an RBI double to center, and another home run from Perez with one runner on. Sadly, the deficit was too large, and they ran out of time.

Their 6-0 victory on Wednesday was arguably the most complete nine innings of the season for Kansas City, and everyone at Kaufmann Stadium was treated to see what an actual competent baseball team looks like.

Pasquantino stayed on a tear with three more hits and three RBI with Isbel getting two hits as well.

Zack Greinke finally got his first win of the season, going five innings while allowing just three hits, no walks and no runs.

Thursday’s 13-10 loss was the epitome of the 2023 Kansas City Royals. Even though it was the most fun game of the MLB season to date, it still ended in heartbreak with everyone leaving the K with a bitter taste in their mouths.

The O’s quickly racked up the first five runs in the game in the first two innings with just two swings. Anthony Santander hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Cedric Mullins hit a bases-clearing three-RBI double in the second. Baltimore would add on three more runs in the third inning to make it 8-1.

Kansas City’s offense, which has been so hot-and-cold this season (mainly cold), erupted for seven unanswered runs to take a 9-8 lead going into the eighth inning.

Notable hits include Freddy Fermin’s first career home run and Salvy with yet another homer in the third inning and Witt Jr. with the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh.

They wouldn’t hold on to that lead for long, though, as Ramon Urias brought home two Orioles baserunners on an RBI single up the middle in the eighth inning. Urias connected again in the ninth with a ground-rule double to score two more runs, making it 12-9. The Royals’ rally fell short in the bottom of the ninth to fall in the final game of the series.

Ultimately, after the Orioles series, fans can be a little more optimistic in the offense, however, the starting pitching took a big step back this week.

Up next is a date with the worst team in baseball for a battle between the worst two Major League Baseball teams.

The Royals enter the weekend series with a record of 8-24 and the Oakland Athletics enter the K just 6-26.

They follow that series up with a four-game home series against the underperforming Chicago White Sox starting on Monday.

If there were ever a time to gain some momentum of any kind, it would be now.
