The Axtell Eagles capped off a perfect 13-0 season by winning the 8-Man Division-II State Championship game last month in Newton over Wheatland/Grinnell, 44-18.
It was the second title in school history with the first in 1993.
Junior quarterback Isaac Detweiler was named Sports in Kansas’ 8-Man D-II Offensive Player of the Year after throwing for nearly 2,000 yards and rushing for nearly 1,300 yards and 63 total touchdowns. Isaac’s 37 touches and 420-plus all-purpose yards performance in the title game will go down as one of the all-time great title game performances in the 8-Man ranks.
Isaac’s dad, and head coach Eric Detweiler was named 8-Man D-II Coach of the Year by Sports in Kansas. Axtell was preseason number six going into the season and they finished the season with the number one scoring offense (54.2) and number one scoring defense (12.3).
Axtell had no seniors at key positions and will be the clear-cut favorite to win another State Title going into the 2022 season.
