The Sabetha Bluejays played host to Riverside Tuesday night in a Big 7 League doubleheader, and it was the host Bluejays sweeping the night.
GIRLS
The girl’s game was by far the best game of the night with the Lady Jays coming from 12 points down to pick up their first win of the season 51-46.
Both teams played well in the opening quarter with the score tied at 14 after one, but Riverside outscored Sabetha 17-10 in the second to lead 31-24 at the half.
Riverside built a 12-point lead at one point, but in the third Sabetha was able to chip away and get it down to just a five-points deficit heading into the fourth.
The Lady Jays then went on an 11-0 run to start the fourth quarter and held Riverside scoreless until a minute to go in the game and got clutch free throw shooting down the stretch to seal the game.
Emily Krebs and Mary Lukert each tallied 15 points to lead Sabetha (1-3) with Krebs being named our player of the game on KNZA after going a perfect 5-for-5 in the fourth quarter. Jessica Gruber also scored 14 for the Lady Jays in her best game yet.
Riverside (1-3) was led in the loss by Taylor Weishaar who scored a game-high 22 points but dealt with foul trouble in the second half.
BOYS
Unlike the girl’s game the boy’s contest was never close from the start as Sabetha built a big lead and rolled to a 47-18 victory.
Riverside was without their top two scorers and Sabetha took advantage leading 14-4 after one and 26-8 at the half with all eight of the Cyclones points coming from sophomore Percy Duncan.
Sabetha then put the game away with a 17-2 third quarter which forced a running clock in the fourth.
Davis Rokey led Sabetha in the win with 13 points while Preston Michael added nine and Christian McAfee eight.
Riverside had just three players score in the loss as Duncan and Kobe Davis each scored eight.
Next up for Sabetha (4-0) is Jeff West on Friday while Riverside (1-3) will travel to Perry Lecompton.
