The high school basketball season continued Tuesday inside the Roundhouse in Hiawatha as the Redhawks swept Troy in a non-league doubleheader.
GIRLS
The girl’s game was all Hiawatha from the start as the Lady Hawks raced out to a 19-7 lead after the first quarter before rolling to a 52-26 victory.
Bailey Pierce and Darcy Lierz got Hiawatha going early combining for 15 first quarter points while forcing Troy into seven turnovers.
The Lady Hawks then held the Trojans to just three points in the second to push the lead to 38-10 at the half behind six more points from Pierce and six from Sarah Madsen.
Troy played much better in the third quarter being outscored just 10-9 in the frame, but Hiawatha led by 29 points going into the fourth quarter and eventually forced a running clock the rest of the way.
Hiawatha (2-0) forced 18 turnovers in the win and were led by Pierce and Lierz in scoring as each finished with 14 points while Madsen added 10.
Troy (0-2) was led in the loss by Avery Euler who scored 10 points while Paityn Engemann added six.
BOYS
The boy’s game was close early, but Hiawatha got red-hot from the outside and knocked down 12 triples in a 70-47 win.
Hiawatha raced out to a 15-10 lead after the first quarter hitting three 3-pointers including one by Mario Alcalde at the buzzer.
Troy came back and actually took a brief lead in the second quarter, but Hiawatha hit five more triples and Joel Bryan scored 10 points while Alcalde hit another buzzer-beater at the end of the half giving the Redhawks a 38-21 lead at intermission.
The Redhawks hit four more 3-pointers in the third quarter to put the game away as Troy had no answer for the sharp-shooting of Hiawatha.
Bryan led the way for the Hawks with 19 points on three triples while Alcalde added 12 and Carson Gilbert 11.
Troy was led in the loss by Jerrit Norris who had nine points while Cam Anderson, Reagan Hartman, and Christian Etherton each scored eight.
Next up for Hiawatha is a trip to Jeff West Friday with live coverage of both games on 103.9 KNZA, while Troy will take Friday off and head to Doniphan West next Tuesday.
