Postseason play continued Thursday night from the Class 1A-DI Sub-State at Centralia with the girl’s going at it in semifinal action and after two great games it will be Clifton-Clyde and Doniphan West meeting for the right to go to the state tournament.

Semifinal #1: Clifton-Clyde 45, Jackson Heights 36

In what to be one of the biggest upsets across the state the Clifton-Clyde girls led from start to finish and knocked out top-seeded Jackson Heights 45-36.

The Eagles gave the Cobras just their second loss of the season and did it by jumping out to an 8-5 lead after the first quarter thanks in part to six points from senior Mallory Callihan.

Jackson Heights, ranked second in 1A-DI, could not get anything going all half long scoring just three points in the second quarter to trail 12-8 at the half.

The third quarter is when Clyde really took control as the Eagles outscored the Cobras 16-3 in the third with junior Karsyn Sikes and freshman Shea Wurtz combining for 10 points in the frame as the deficit for Jackson Heights ballooned to 17 points going into the fourth.

In the fourth the Cobras tried to make a run as they finally got a pair of 3-pointers from junior Rebekuh Hutfles after starting the game 0-for-10 from beyond the arc, but Clyde responded with junior Emma Nobert scoring eight in the final frame to seal the upset.

The Eagles (12-9) won despite turning the ball over 22 times as Wurtz led the way with 15 points while Nobert added 12 and Callihan 10.

Jackson Heights ends their historic season with a 17-2 record after going unbeaten in NEKL play with the lone senior Amaya Marlatt leading the way with 11 points while Kaylee Thompson added 10.

Semifinal #2: Doniphan West 57, Frankfort 55

It was billed to be one of the best games in the state and lived up to the hype with Doniphan West and Frankfort trading blows throughout before the Mustangs squeaked out a 57-55 win.

It was a high-scoring affair to start with both offenses clicking early, but it was Frankfort senior Lydia Loiseau who hit a 3-pointer at the quarter buzzer to finish with eight first quarter points giving the Cats a 17-13 lead after one.

The Mustangs battled right back and never blinked with sophomore Avery Weathersbee scoring seven points in the second quarter as Doniphan West took a 32-28 lead into the halftime break thanks in large part to Wildcat senior Mariah Broxterman being stuck on the bench with two fouls the entire quarter.

Just like the Mustangs did in the second quarter, in the third Frankfort bounced right back though and snagged a 42-41 lead going into the fourth with Broxterman notching five points in the frame.

In the fourth it was back-and-forth throughout with Doniphan West actually holding a 7-point lead at one point but as it was all game long Frankfort battled back and tied the game on a 3-pointer from Kacia Shirley with 22 seconds to go.

Doniphan West took a timeout and out of the break head coach Perry Smith drew up a play for sophomore Kyra Johnson who threw up an off-balance shot that fell through off the window with 3.9 seconds remaining giving the Mustangs a 57-55 lead.

On the ensuing play Frankfort’s Aubrie Rose took the inbounds pass and drove the ball up the right side of the floor where she got fouled with 1.8 left, but Rose missed the front end of a one-and-one and following a scrum time ran out giving D-West the victory.

The Mustangs (18-3) were in the game throughout thanks to Weathersbee who was a stud all game long finishing with a game-high 24 points while Chloe Clevenger added 10.

Frankfort ends the year in heartbreaking fashion ending with a 17-4 record and will send off four key seniors with the Cats being led in scoring by two of them as Lydia Loiseau and Mariah Broxterman each had 13.

That sets up Clifton-Clyde and Doniphan West for the sub-state championship game which will be played Saturday in Centralia beginning at 2 p.m. and we will have live coverage on 92.1 KMZA.
