The Jackson Heights girls’ basketball team entered the Hiawatha Invitational last week as the No. 5-ranked team in Class 1A-DI and proved why going 3-0 in the tournament with a thrilling 44-41 win over Marysville on Saturday.
The Cobras led throughout the championship game leading 14-8 after the first quarter and 24-21 at the half.
Marysville battled back in the third quarter and outscored Jackson Heights 12-7 to take a 33-31 lead going into the fourth, but the Cobras responded with a 13-8 fourth to squeak out the win.
Amaya Marlatt led the Cobras with 19 points in the victory while Kaylee Thompson added 10.
The win actually marked the fourth win of the week for the Lady Cobras after they pushed their Northeast Kansas League win streak to 22 straight games with a 52-21 win over Maur Hill-Mount Academy in a makeup game.
Jackson Heights essentially won four games in about four and a half days including three wins over Class 3A schools.
The Cobras are now 10-1 on the season after the big week with a strong chance of claiming not only a league title but possibly a berth in the state tournament as well.
