The Nemaha Central girls basketball teams entered the Wellsville Invitational last week with an unbeaten record and the No. 3 ranking in Class 3A while knowing it would be a tournament that would give them their best test of the season.
On Saturday afternoon the Thunder girls passed that test, taking down 4A No. 5 Louisburg in the title game 52-48 which was their second win over a ranked opponent in the tournament.
The Thunder dealt with adversity throughout the championship trailing 27-20 at the half and 35-32 going into the fourth quarter before outscoring Louisburg 20-13 in the fourth quarter to earn the victory.
Senior Cassidy Corby was outstanding throughout scoring a game-high 29 points in the win going 14-of-18 from the free throw line while Hannah Macke added 11.
It was the second ranked win for the Thunder in the tournament after taking down 5A No. 3 Lansing in the semifinals on Thursday 40-35 where Corby scored 17 more points and Macke 11 again.
Corby averaged 19 points per game in the tournament while Macke scored 11 points in each of the three tournament games.
The Nemaha Central girls improved to 12-0 on the year with the win and will get back into Big 7 League play on Tuesday against Hiawatha where the Thunder hold a 7-0 record this season.
