For the first time since the Twin Valley League tournament the Valley Heights and Wetmore high school basketball teams met up in Wetmore Friday and played to a split with the Mustang girls winning the opening game 45-24 while the Cardinal boys won 58-50.
GIRLS: Valley Heights 45, Wetmore 24
In the girl’s game both teams struggled offensively in the first half with the Mustangs jumping out to a 9-3 lead after the first quarter thanks to a pair of baskets from Emma Yungeberg and Maddy Vermetten.
Valley Heights built their lead to 18-7 at the half and then put the game away with a 6-2 third quarter pushing the Mustang lead to 15 going into the fourth quarter before pushing the lead to 21 by game’s end.
The Mustangs were led in scoring by Emma Yungeberg who finished with 10 points while Cat Toerber and Maddy Vermetten added nine.
Wetmore turned the basketball over 22 times on the evening and were led in scoring by Reagan Osterhaus who had seven.
BOYS: Wetmore 58, Valley Heights 50
The boy’s game was back-and-forth throughout with Wetmore holding a 9-7 after one and a 23-17 lead at the half on nine first half points from Kael McQueen.
Valley Heights battled back in the third quarter though and got a pair of 3-pointers from Caden Parker to eventually tie the game at 41 going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth though the Mustangs started to struggle holding on to the basketball and Braden Henry got going for Wetmore to earn the hard-fought win.
Henry finished with a game-high 17 points in the win for the Cardinals while McQueen added 13 and Kyler Wommack 11.
Valley Heights played one of their best games of the year and were led by Jake Yungeberg who finished with 12 points while Trenton L’Ecuyer added 11.
