In a TVL Showdown Wetmore and Onaga Spilt on the Hardwood

Each team came into the night in search of a league win to help propel them into the upcoming Twin Valley League tournament and it was the home squad the Lady Cardinals of Wetmore ultimately coming out victorious over the Lady Buffaloes of Onaga, 52-35.

While, the game finished in the double figure margin Onaga made a surge in the ballgame to make its interesting in the second half. Wetmore established an early lead with their patent full court pressure which flustered the Onaga into turnovers and lead to buckets for the Cardinals as they held a 30-13 lead at the half behind 13 first half points by senior, Dana Kramer who finished the night with 19 points and the Community National Bank of Seneca and Sabetha “Player to Bank On” honors.

Coming out of the second half both teams started sluggish only registering one point between them for over five minutes, but down the stretch of the third quarter Onaga picked up the scoring tossing out a 13-6 third period to get with 10 points and at a few points into a single digit lead for Wetmore. The Lady Cardinals responded in the fourth quarter with a 16-9 quarter to close out the ball game and capture the win.

Wetmore was led by Kramer with her 19 points, but fellow seniors, Alayna Noe and Amber Meggison each chipped in double figures, also. Noe finished the night with 14 points and Meggison tallied 11 on the evening. For the Buffaloes in the loss junior, Jocelyn Marten lead the way with 15 points, tallying a mark in every quarter, while sophomore, Rebekah Glessnar added 10 points.

With the win Wetmore improved to 5-2 on the season and 2-2 in league play, while Onaga fell to 3-6 on the year and 0-3 in the TVL with the loss. Both teams now have their sights set on the Twin Valley League tournament that starts this weekend in Frankfort.

 

Boys

The records coming into the game might have led you to believe this game could be a mismatch well if you know anything about the TVL you know that on any given night anyone can beat anyone and the TVL is though top to bottom no matter what teams records indicate. Onaga, 7-1 was taking on Wetmore 0-6 on the Cardinals home floor.

Buffaloes started off with a slight flurry and took the early lead in the first period but down the stretch of the quarter Wetmore took over and lead at home 16-13 after the first period. Wetmore would continue to stretch their lead and blossom the lead up to six at the half, 26-20.

The two teams out of the half traded blows back and forth and Onaga closed the gap in the third period but Wetmore still ultimately held on to the lead, 39-35 at the end of three periods. Onaga then would start to make the push late in the fourth quarter with about two minutes left and take the lead, but Onaga struggled from the free throw line and ultimately allowed Wetmore to stay in the game until the final seconds in the contest.

For the Buffaloes it was the senior tandem of Thomas Eisenbarth and Mitchell Kufahl leading the way with 14 points and 11 points, respectively, while sophomore, Jarod Gronewoller chipped in 12 points. Wetmore in the loss was led by Ross Boeckman who tallied 20 points, having his best performance of the season as he hit four three’s.

With the win Onaga improved to 8-1 on the year and perfect 3-0 in the TVL while Wetmore is still in search of that elusive first win of the season at 0-7 and 0-4 in league play. Both teams know turn their attention to the TVL tournament that starts this upcoming weekend in Frankfort.
