For the first time ever the state of Kansas hosted the first ever KSHSAA State Wrestling Championships Thursday in Salina and of the six area girls in action one was crowned a state champion while two others area wrestler placed.
The lone state champion came from Onaga’s Morgan Mayginnes who went a perfect 3-0 on the mats at 155 pounds after an opening round bye. Mayginnes picked up a pin in her first match, a technical fall 16-0 victory in her second match and a pin in 44 second in the championship match. She wasn’t scored on the entire postseason and finishes the year a perfect 13-0.
One other area placer at the state tournament was ACCHS’ Tannah Forbes who took fifth at 191 pounds with a 2-1 day. She opened with a bye in the first round and then picked up a pin in the quarterfinals before falling by major decision in the semifinals. She wrapped up her tournament with a pin in the fifth-place match and finished with a record of 10-8 on the year.
The final state placer was Royal Valley's Maya Odgen who finished sixth with a 3-2 day falling in the fifth place match. She opened the day with a win by decision in her first match before suffering a pin in her second match of the day. She then won back-to-back matches to make it to the fifth place match where she suffered a loss by major decision (9-0) to end her tournament.
