The high school cross country season continued Saturday with the regional meets for all classifications and a few area teams along with several individuals punched their tickets to the state meet next week. The top 10 runners in each regional advanced to state.
In Class 4A just one area runner advanced to the state meet at Wamego Country Club, as Atchison’s Addalyn Collins took seventh in the girl’s race with a time of 20:10.67.
In Class 3A two schools had teams qualify for the state meet, as the Hiawatha girls and Sabetha boys each took third to qualify for state.
On the girl’s side the Redhawks were led by Katherine Madsen who finished second and 23 seconds behind the winner of the Riley County regional while Darcy Lierz added a 14th place finish.
Sabetha and ACCHS rounded out girl’s state qualifiers in 3A as the Bluejays had Hattie Lukert finish fifth while Victoria Caplinger came in sixth.
On the boy’s side the best area finisher came from Hiawatha who had Justin Hodge take second while Jeff West’s Conner Inman finished ninth to qualify for state.
Although the Bluejays qualified for state as a team they failed to have a runner finish inside of the top 10 but Cameron Harrel had the best finish taking 12th.
In Class 2A at Wabaunsee the only team qualifiers came on the boy’s side as McLouth won the regional while Jeff County North finished second.
The Bulldogs had three top five finishers with Jared Plake, Henry Cloyd and Gus Forsberg finishing third, fourth and fifth.
JCN had just one top 10 finisher with Trevor Pentlin taking second while Jackson Heights had Daniel Little win the meet to qualify for state.
On the girl’s side in 2A four area runners qualified for the state meet with Jackson Heights’ Annie Allen finishing sixth while JCN’s Zetta Noll took eighth.
McLouth rounded out 2A with Baylee Wolfe finishing ninth and Reagan Clark 10th to each qualify for state.
In Class 1A several area teams and athletes earned tickets to state the Doniphan West and Centralia girls along with the Axtell and Valley Falls boys.
On the girl’s side Doniphan West had three top 10 finishers to win the regional led by Elle Williams who finished third while Chloe Clevinger took fourth and Claire Cole sixth.
Centralia finished fourth in the team standings with one top 10 finish as Olivia Kuckelman took seventh to end state qualifiers individually.
On the boy’s side Axtell won the regional championship with three guys inside of the top 11 led by Quinn Buessing who finished fifth, while Simon Schmitz and Clark Werner finished 10th and 11th.
Valley Falls finished fourth in the regional to qualify for state as a team with one medalist as Noah Hefty led the way a sixth-place finish.
Area qualifiers now get set for the state meet this Saturday, November 2 with Classes 4A, 2A and 1A at Wamego while Class 3A will be held at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence.
