Valley Heights Girls & Boys Win Home Track Invite While Several Area Competitors Perfrom Well

An early start in the day allowed area teams to get their track season rolling as Valley Heights played host to several other Twin Valley League track squads and a few other schools, also on Tuesday as the teams avoided the rain and got to competition in track and field action. 

At the end of the day Valley Heights came away taking the girls and boys team titles at the meet as the lady Mustangs posted 125 total points and boys tallied 102 total points each to take first. On the girls side Centralia took second place as a team finishing with 100 total points, while Pawnee City tallied 75 points for third. The rest of the girls teams finished Axtell fourth, Onaga fifth, Linn sixth, Troy seventh, Blue Valley-Randolph eighth, Hanover ninth, Southern 10th and Frankfort 11th. On the boys side Pawnee City took second with 89 points, while Hanover finished third with 78 points. The rest of the boys teams finished Centralia fourth, Axtell fifth, Frankfort sixth, Southern seventh, Linn eighth, Onaga ninth, Blue Valley-Randolph and Troy tied for 10th and St. Xavier finished 12th. 

Valley Heights girls on their way to first place were led by eight first place finishes in individual events between three athletes. Kayla Smith started the track season strong winning the 100 and 200 meter dashes with times of 13.30 and 27.12, while leaping to victory in the triple jump (38'01.50) and long jump (17'03) winning triple jump by over three feet and the long jump by two feet. Sam and Shelby Vermetten each snagged a pair of first place finishes. Sam won the 400 meter dash (1:01.69) and the 800 meter run (2:30.16), taking the gold in the 800 by over 11 seconds. Shelby tossed her way to wins in the shot put (35'10.50) and discus (119'10) winning the discus up over 20 feet. 

Mustang boys on their way to first place were led by four first place finishes including a pair of golds for Logan Woodyard who won the triple jump (40'02) and the long jump (18'05). Alex Hardin also earned a first place finish winning the 800 meter run with a time 2:11.89, while the 4x800 meter relay team earned first place with a time of 8:58.33. 

Centralia Panthers had six event winners in the first meet of the season. The lady Panthers who took second as a team with several top notch performances had two first place finishers as Breanna Schmitz won the pole vault with a mark of 10'00 winning the event by over a foot and Madison Lueger won the javelin by over 24 feet with a toss of 130'06. Dylan Boeckman led the Panther boys winning both the 300 meter hurdles (42.54) and the pole vault (12'06). Isaac Gore and Josh Hasenkamp each snagged a first place finish also as Gore won the 400 meter dash (56.88) and Hasenkamp took the gold in the javelin (146'05) 

Four first place finishes at the Valley Heights Invite led Pawnee City on the day. In the girls competition Mariah Willey won the 100m hurdles (16.03) and the 4x800 meter relay team posted a time of 11:35.80 to take the gold. For the Pawnee City boys Shamar Willey won the 110 meter hurdles (19.43) and Andrew Davis tossed his way to first in the discus (140'04) winning the event by a little of 18 feet. 

The distance runs for the highlight of the meet for the Axtell Eagles as Olivia Kuckelman took first in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Kuckelman won the 1600 with a time of 6:00.94 winning by nearly 21 seconds and won the 3200 by nearly 23 seconds with a time of 13:20.49. Burke Deters also claimed a gold winning the 1600 meter run behind a time of 5:03.02. 

Hanover Wildcats 4x400 meter girls and boys relay teams each earned first place with times of 4:29.32 and 3:45.74, respectively, while Pete Peters won the high jump with a leap of 6'00. 

Linn Bulldogs were led by a trio of first place finishes as the girls 4x100 meter relay posted a time of 53.81 to take first, while Shelby Ohlde won the high jump (5'06) and Chantz Peters tossed his way to first in the shot put (44'06.75). 

Frankfort and Blue Valley-Randolph each had one individual event winner of the day as Brodric Shirley won the boys 3200 meter run with a time of 10:39.22 winning by over 10 sec and Georgia Hatesohl posted a time of 50.88 to win the girls 300m hurdles.
