Five Area Teams Compete at St. Mary's Wrestling Invitational

Five area teams of grapplers took to the mats on Saturday, competing in the St. Mary's Invitational along with 10 other schools.

Pleasant Ridge led the area performances as a team placing sixth with 123.5 points, while Jeff West followed in seventh place with 111 points. Royal Valley, Atchison and Immaculata placed ninth, 12th and 13th, respectively at the St. Mary's Invitational. Wamego took home first place as a team posting 216.5 points, while St. Mary's and Rawlins County rounded out the Top three finishing second and third.

The Rams of Pleasant Ridge were led on the day by the performance of Colton Doty (220lbs) who posted a 3-0 record to claim first place in his weight class, finishing with a pair of pinfall wins and winning the Championship bout by a 3-2 decision. Eight other Rams medaled on the day, posting Top eight finishes. Both Brandon Broddle (120lbs) and Dustin Graham (182lbs) each earned third place finishes after posting 3-1 and 4-1 records, respectively on the mats. Nick Hyde (160lbs) and Kealan Dietze (170lbs) both wrestled to fourth place finishes, while Nic Bridges (145lbs) finished fifth place, both Luke Oatney (106lbs) and Corbin Meyers (152lbs) took home sixth place finishes and Jacob Gum (126lbs) placed eighth.

Jeff West Tigers had eight Top eight finishes on the day including a individual champion to lead their performances on the mats as Sam Shenk (195lbs) took home first place by going 2-0 on the day. Sam opened up with a bye and followed that up with two pinfall wins, including winning in 5:00 in the Championship bout. The Tigers notched a second, third, fourth, fifth and three seventh place finishes also on the day. Nicholas Reeb (152lbs) posted a 2-1 record to take second place , while a 3-1 record by Austin Michaelis (113lbs) lead him to a third place finish. Branden Callahan (126lbs) took home fourth place for the Tigers, while Lucas Hollman (106lbs) picked up a fifth place finish and the trio of Kody Gibson (120lbs), Ryan Wisner (132lbs) and Chase Montgomery (160lbs) all finished with seventh place finishes.

For the Royal Valley Panthers it was seven Top eight finishes on the mats at the St. Mary's Invitational on Saturday. Matthew Bailey (182lbs) who is ranked in Class 4A for the Panthers put together a strong day on the mats going 4-0 to win his weight class, starting the day with two pinfall wins, then winning by a 4-0 decision in the Semifinals. In the Championship bout Bailey notched a 14-10 decision victory for the individual title on the day. Jacob Box (195lbs) and Noah Hart (145lbs) each notched the next best performances on the mats for Royal Valley placing second and third after 2-1 and 3-1 records on the day. Ethan Ashley (113lbs) , Zach Lux (132lbs), Lance Bailey (126lbs) and Jerry Coan (138lbs) placed fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth for Royal Valley on the day, respectively.

A third place performance by Spencer Vice (132lbs) who went 4-1 to place third in his weight class to lead the Atchison Redmen at the St. Mary's Invitational. While, Andrew Adrian (120lbs), Dalton Armstrong (138lbs) and Arihanna Franklin (113lbs) took home fourth, seventh and eighth place finishes for the Redmen.

The Immaculata Raiders had four grapplers medal on the day, placing in the Top eight, with Max Campbell (170lbs) posting the best Raider performance going 3-1 to earn a second place finish. While, Kristian Barrientos (126lbs) took home sixth place and both Jared Clothier (152lbs) and Anthony Brigg (182lbs) finished eighth place.
