Sabetha Girl's Tennis Brings In Another First Place Finish Winning the Hiawatha Invitational

Top notch performances at competitions are starting to pile up this season for the Sabetha Bluejays girl's tennis team as they picked up another first over the weekend winning the Hiawatha Invitational. Hiawatha, Perry Lecompton and Atchison, also competed from the area.

Behind two first place performances and a pair of second place showings the Bluejays took home first place with the best winning percentage on the day. Pacing the Bluejays in their flight to another first place team finish was a the singles competitors in Lexi Wenger and Courtney Plattner who both went 4-0. Wenger in singles #1 notched a 7-0 win over Atchison and 7-1 wins over Hiawatha and Highland Park, making the Championship match against Seaman and Lexi took home first in a tight 7-5 win. For Plattner she picked up a three wins in pool play beating Highland Park and Hiawatha 7-0 and winning 7-1 against Atchison, moving into the Championship match, where she won 7-4 over Seaman.

In doubles competition it was a pair of silver medals on the day at the Hiawatha Invitational as the tandem of Jordyn Wells and Alexa Menold took second in doubles #1 and the team of Jena Winkler and Nicole Brey placed second in doubles #2. Wells and Menold made it to the Championship match after going 3-0 in pool play beating Highland Park, Hiawatha and Atchison all 7-0, but in the Championship match the tandem fell to Seaman 7-3, finishing the day 3-1 and second place. Like Wells and Menold, the team of Winkler and Brey went through pool play unblemished beating Highland Park, Hiawatha and Atchison all 7-0, but in the Championship matchup of doubles #2 lost to the team from Seaman, 7-2 to finish the day with a 3-1 record and second place.

The team of Abby Manning and Lindsey Chadwell went 1-2 in doubles #1 as Sabetha's second team in that competition, while Lauren Menold and Shelby Pease both also went 1-2 on the day as the Bluejays second competitor in the singles #2 and #1 competitions.

Perry Lecompton and Atchison each finished the day with a pair of Top four finishers in competition. For the Kaws the tandem of Harleigh Robertson and Caitlyn Robb took third in the doubles #1 action finishing 3-1 on the day after beating Atchison's team of Jade Boldridge and Alyxus Thomas, 7-0 in the third place match. Boldrigde and Thomas finished the day 2-2 for Atchison taking fourth. Robertson and Robb in pool play won 7-1 over Free State and 7-2 over Sabetha (2nd team) and lost 7-0 to Seaman, while Boldridge and Thomas in pool play won 7-1 over Hiawatha and Highland Park but lost to Sabetha.

In singles #2 Perry Lecompton and Atchison meet up in the third place match with the Kaws claiming third in that match, also as Lia Jones topped Allison Kelly of Atchison 7-5 to take third and finished 3-1, while Kelly finished 2-2 on the day. Jones in pool play won 7-4 over Free State and 7-1 over Sabetha (2nd competitor) and lost 7-2 to Seaman, while Kelly in pool play won 7-0 over Hiawatha and Highland Park and lost to Sabetha.

For Hiawatha they picked up just two match wins on the day as the team of Emily Meyer and Kaitia Wilson won 7-5 over Highland Park in doubles #1 and Naomi Bicker won 7-0 over Highland Park in singles #2. Both Bicker and the team of Meyer and Wilson went 1-2 in competition.
