Hiawatha Girls Take Third as Team in 3A at State Track, While 40 Medals are Earned by Area Athletes

Class 3A State track competition had a Big Seven and Northeast Kansas League flavor to it with 40 medals earned by area athletes, including four State titles.

The Hiawatha Red Hawk girls led the way of the area teams with the best team performance notching a third place finish as a team, as they were led by the quartet of Jordan Puvogel, Molly Kettler, Courtney Brockhoff and Kailey Davis who posted a time of 9:52.28 to win the 4x800 meter relay State title. Puvogel added to that medal for herself as she finished second in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs and finished third in the 800 meter run. Brianna Schmitz and Emily Gartner each added a pair of medals also for the Lady Red Hawks as Schmitz placed seventh in the high jump and eighth in the 400 meter dash while Gartner took third in the discus and seventh in the shot put.

Hiawatha boys had four medalists on the day and were led by a pair of bronze medals as Quentin Overdick tossed his way to third in the discus and the team of Ryker Smith, Brandt Houk, Brendan Steele and Conner Bigham finished third in the 4x800 meter relay. Bigham added a fifth place finish in the 800 meter run and eighth place in the high jump to his day.

Sabetha Bluejays came home with seven medals at State including one State title as Meagan Garrett defended her title in the high jump posting a leap of 5'04 to win. Rhianna Becker, Heidi Heiniger and Courtney Plattner all earned medals for the Bluejays in field events, too as Becker placed fourth in the discus, Heiniger and Plattner both earned seventh place finishes in the javelin and long jump, respectively. Alexis McAfee, Emily Strathman, Taryn Schuette and Miranda Huettner teamed up to place sixth for the Bluejays in the 4x800 meter relay. On the boys side of competition the team of Kellen Russell, Jacob Frey, Michael Baumgartner and Corbin Cox placed fourth in the 4x800 meter relay, while Keegan Cox took sixth in the 3200 meter run.

Nemaha Valley Raiders notched seven medals at State track with three medals coming from Rachael Baumgartner as she earned third in the pole vault and eighth in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. Shaylyn Stallbaumer had the best finish for the Raiders taking second place in the discus and also third in the shot put, while Colin Lierz earned a pair of medals finishing sixth in the 1600 meter run and seventh in the 800 meter run.

Tony Weber led the way for Pleasant Ridge at State as he won the State title in the 3200 meter run after posting a time of 9:36.93. Weber added a fourth place finish in the 1600 meter run to his State performance, while the Pleasant Ridge team of Brandon Broddle, Kyle Lansing, Matt Smith and Nick Holmes placed seventh.

ACCHS Tiger, Madison Bissell brought home the State title in the 800 meter run posting a time of 2:24.68 to win the event, while she teamed up with Rebekah Scholz, Mackenzie Forbes and Lillie Holtgrave to place eighth in the 4x800 meter relay.

Horton Charger, Trey Dishon came home with a pair of fields as he tossed his way to fifth place in the shot put and sixth in the discus.

While, Marysville had six top eight performances at State track led by a third place finish by the girl’s 4x100 meter relay team of Chloe Cudney, Cheyenne Seematter, Rachel Heiman and Claire Cudney. Heiman added a fourth place in the 200 meter dash to her day, while Aubrie Peschel finished sixth and seventh in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, respectively and Bryclin Alstrom finished fifth in the 400 meter dash. Alstrom and Peschel also teamed up with Lauren Hawkinson and Ally Kort to place fifth in the 4x800 meter relay.

Adam Wagner of Maur Hill-Mount Acadmey earned the lone Raven medal at State finishing eighth in the 400 meter dash, while Riverside's Andrae McGaughy was the lone Cyclone to win a medal finishing fourth in the 300 meter hurdles.

Overall the Big Seven and Northeast Kansas Leagues made the presence known in the Class 3A State track competition earning 40 medals.
