Sabetha Girls & Hiawatha Boys Win Hiawatha Track Invite

Eleven area teams squared off against each other at the Hiawatha track and field Invitational on Thursday and just about every area team won at least one event between the boys and girls competition.

It was once again the Sabetha girls and Hiawatha boys coming out on top as teams at another track meet this season.

Sabetha girls took home first place behind six first place finish and 178.5 points, while Hiawatha followed in second place winning eight events and scoring 119 points, Falls City rounded out the top three with 61.5 points just edging out Holton who finished fourth with 60 points. The rest of the team finishes were: 5th - Pleasant Ridge, 6th - ACCHS, 7th - Maur Hill-Mount Academy, 8th - Riverside, 9th - Troy, 10th - Immaculata and 11th - Horton.

For the boys, Hiawatha took home first place behind 129 points and four first place finishes; Riverside followed in second place with 111.5 points, while Sabetha rounded out the top three with 87.5 points, beating out Holton by just a few points as the Wildcats took fourth with 83 points. The rest of the team finishes were: 5th - Falls City, 6th - Pleasant Ridge, 7th - Maur Hill-Mount Academy, 8th - Horton, 9th - Immaculata, 10th - Troy and 11th - ACCHS.

The Sabetha Bluejays put together a solid day on the track and in the field at the Hiawatha Invitational earning seven first place finishes, with six in the girls competition. Two of the six first place finishes for the girls were captured on the track and the other four in the field events. Bluejays 4x100 meter relay team of Nicole Brey, Courtney Plattner, Meagan Garrett and Kelli Stallbuamer posted a time of 53.11 to claim the gold, while Brey also won the 100 meter dash on the track with a time of 13.18. Both Stallbaumer and Plattner also won golds in field events as they both leapt their way to wins in the triple (31'06.5) and long jump (15'05) competitions, respectively. Heidi Heiniger and Anna Sunderland each won a field event, too winning the javelin (142'01) and pole vault (8'06), respectively. On the boy’s side, Keegan Cox brought home the lone Bluejay first place winning the 3200 meter run behind a time of 10:48.87.

For the Hiawatha Red Hawks they registered the most first place finishes on the day combined between the boys and girls with 12. Brianna Schmitz paced the lady Red Hawks grabbing three individual gold medals by continuing her strong track season, winning the both the 200 and 400 meter dashes with times of 27.48 and 1:05.05, while leaping her way to a win in the high jump (5'02). Schmitz also teamed up with Emily Bauer, Jordan Puvogel and Molley Kettler to win the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:21.77, while Bauer, Puvogel and Kettler raced with Courtney Brockhoff to win the 4x800 meter relay title (10:31.18). Puvogel's day didn't stop with a pair of golds in the relays with her teammates as she won both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs with times of 5:38.49 and 12:29.14, respectively. Emily Gartner claimed the other Red Hawk girls first place finish on the day tossing her way to a win in the discus (127'09). On the boys side Conner Bigham led the Red Hawks winning two events, claiming the 800 meter run (2:09.87) and high jump (6'04) titles. Quentin Overdick tossed his way to the win in the discus (159'07) and the team of Bigham, Ryker Smith, Brendan Steele and Brandt Houk brought home the gold in the 4x800 meter relay (8:51.58).

Both Riverside and Holton each took home six first place finishes on the day at the Hiawatha Invitational.

For Riverside all six came on the boy’s side of competition with Andrae McGaughy leading the way as he raced to the win in the 300 meter hurdles (41.58) and leapt his way to the triple jump win (40'08), while also being part of the 4x400 meter relay team that posted a time of 3:38.01 to win that event. Lynell Pritchard, Dillon Logston and Sheldon Hawkins ran with McGaughy on the 4x400 team. Logston and Cody Walker each won a field event for Riverside winning the pole vault (11'0) and javelin (162'03), respectively. Walker was also part of Riverside's 4x100 meter throwers relay team that won that competition with a time of 51.42 with Dalon Goodwin, Canon Sharp and Austin Vogel competing on the team with Walker.

Holton claimed six first place finishes, too with five coming in the boy’s competition and one in the girls competition. Drake Ewing, Dakota Colhouer and Brendan Hampton all won gold on the track claiming the 100 meter dash (11.30), 400 meter dash (53.86) and 110 meter hurdles (15.40), titles respectively. Both Hampton and Ewing along with Dalton Colhouer and Miles McClintock-Strozier raced their way to the win the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 45.14. The other boys first place finish for the Wildcats came by Indee Allen who leapt his way to the win in the long jump (19'02.5), while the lone Wildcat first in the girl’s competition was also in the field events as Kyrstie Miller tossed her way to the win the shot put (37'0).

Pleasant Ridge and Maur Hill each had a pair of first place finishers on the day each having one girl and one boy earn a first place finish. For the Rams, Tony Weber paced his way to the 1600 meter run behind a time of 4:43.02, while Syvannah Williams won the 300 meter hurdles posting a time of 51.78. Kassie Johnson and Adam Wagner earned the Ravens first place finishes on the day in the 100 meter hurdles (17.52) and 200 meter dash (23.23), respectively.

Horton, ACCHS and Falls City all took home a first place finish also on the day at the Hiawatha Invitational. For the Chargers, Trey Dishon tossed his way to the win in the shot put with a toss of 47'06. Madison Bissell led the performances for the ACCHS Tigers by winning the 800 meter run with a time of 2:33.21. While the Falls City Tigers girl’s 4x100 meter thrower's relay team of Sydney Armbruster, Haley Cochran, Megan Erickhoff and Brittany Webster took home gold with a time of 1:00.49.
