46 Kanzaland Area High School Track Athletes Set to Compete at 87th Annual Kansas Relays

The Kansas Relays is one of the top track competitions on a yearly basis and not only features college athletes, but professional track athletes and high school athletes, also.

This year in the 87th edition of the Kansas Relays 46 area Kansas high school track athletes are set to compete in competition against other top flight track stars at the high school level no matter what classification. The student athletes will get a chance to help break in the newly constructed Rock Chalk Park track facility.

High school competition starts on Friday at 8:00am going all day with events and continues on Saturday at starting 8:00am and wrapping up around 1:00pm, with the college action to finish off the day Saturday in the afternoon and evening.

Hiawatha, Atchison, Valley Heights, Frankfort, Jefferson County North, Perry Lecompton, Clifton-Clyde and Washington County will all have competitors in action at this year's Kansas Relays.

For Hiawatha both Emily Gartner and Quentin Overdick will compete in field events as Gartner will compete in both the discus and shot put, while Overdick will compete in the discus. The group of Tyler Boeckman, Brandt Houk, Brendan Steele, Conner Bigham and Ryker Smith will race in the Distance Medley relay and the 4x800 meter relay. While the group of Kailey Davis, Molly Kettler, Courtney Brockhoff, Jordan Puvogel and Makena Gilpin will compete in the 4xMile Relay and 4x800 meter relay. Davis, Kettler, Puvogel and Gilpin along with Brianna Schmitz will also race in the Distance Medley for the Red Hawks and Puvogel individually will run in the 1600 meter run.

Atchison Redmen track squad will have representatives at the Kansas Relays competing mainly in the relay competitions. For the Lady Red the quartet of Imogene Bratton, Sierra Smith, Mady Shipley and Sarah Jaloma will race in the Sprint Medley. Mady Shipley, Imogene Bratton and Smith will also race in the 4x100 meter relay with Peyton Welch, while Shipley will be on the 4x400 meter relay team with Jailhyn Bratton, Anna Shipley and Kate McCoole. Smith is the only Lady Redmen that will compete individually as she will run in the 100 meter dash. Atchison boys will have a relay team in the Sprint Medley and 4x100 meter relay. Shane Johnston, Bennie Smith, Jerel Rawls and Justin Whitmer will race on the Sprint Medley team, while both Johnston and Smith will team with Parker Welch and Wade Gassman on the 4x100 meter relay team. Dane Anderson will also represent Atchison in boy’s competition as she will compete in the shot put.

The Valley Heights Mustangs will be represented at the Kansas Relays by sophomore, Brandi Jo Roepke and junior, Elijah Smith. Roepke will compete in three events competing on the track in the 100 meter dash and 400 meter run, while also competing on the field in the long jump. Smith is set to compete in four events as he will jump in the triple jump and long jump, while also racing in the 110 meter hurdles and 100 meter dash.

Frankfort Wildcat senior, Lucas Adams is looking to continue to build momentum in the pole vault as he is set to compete in the pole vault at the Relays.

The Jefferson County North Chargers will be represented by a pair of lady Chargers in Laramie Leakey and Heather Polson. Leakey is set to compete in the pole vault, while Polson will take flight in the high jump at the Relays.

Perry Lecompton will have 10 competitors at the Kansas Relays will a majority of them competing as part of relay teams for the Kaws. The group of Colin Coleman, Seth Surface, Cody Williams and Will Hinrichsen will all compete for the Kaws on the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 meter relay teams, while Cole Kellum is also a part of the 4x200 and 4x400 team. Coleman is also set to compete individually in the 400 meter run at the Relays. The lady Kaws will have the group of Kaylee Visser, Emma Taylor, Halsten Coyle and Lexia Jamison competing together in the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relays. Emma Taylor will also compete in the 400 meter run, while Taylor Fuller will also represent the Kaws competing in the javelin.

Clifton-Clyde and Washington County will also have competitors at the Kansas Relays competing in the 110 meter hurdles and the 1600 meter run both on the boy’s side of competition. William Ohlde will run for the Eagles in the 110 meter hurdles, while Dylan Hodgson will run in the 1600 meter run for the Tigers.
