Holton Wins 4A Wrestling Regional, While Four Other Area Schools Send Wrestlers to State

Looking to continue their season many area grapplers hit the mats over the weekend in Regional action and the area Class 4A teams all competed at Holton and it was five area teams seeing at least one wrestler earn a spot at the State tournament.

The host, Hotlon Wildcats looking to set themselves up with multiple qualifiers for State to defend their Class 4A State title from last year and the Wildcats did so with 12 grapplers qualify for State out of 14 weight classes. Holton's great showing on the mats also earned them the Regional championship posting 246 total points, which was 120.5 points better than second place.

Royal Valley, Jeff West, Atchison and Perry Lecompton all had wrestlers earn top four finishes in competition, also earning spots at the 4A State competition starting next Friday, February 28th in Salina at the Salina Bicentennial Center.

For the Wildcats they were led by five individual Regional champions as Justin Rieschick (138lbs), Lucas Lovvorn (152lbs), Andrew Rieschick (160lbs), Kyle Mick (182lbs) and Cooper Zeller (285lbs) all claimed the title in their weight class. Justin Rieschick posted a 4-0 record with three pinfall wins and a bye, winning the championship bout with a pin in 5:56, while Lovvorn also went 4-0 winning his first three matches via pinfall and won his championship bout with a 5-3 decision.

Andrew Rieschick put up a 4-0 record on his way to a Regional title with a pair of pinfall wins and pair of major decision wins, including an 11-0 major decision win in the championship match. Mick also posted a 4-0 record winning his championship bout with a 9-0 decision, while Zeller had the biggest victory of the tourney topping the number one 4A wrestler at 285lbs in Justin Scott handing him his first loss of the season. Zeller outdueled Scott to a 5-2 decision in the championship bout.

Joining those five Wildcats at State will be Clayton Folk (195lbs), Jonah Lutz (132lbs) and Tyler Price (120lbs) who all took home second place showings at Regionals in their weight classes. While, Justin Poll (126lbs) and Mason Baum (170lbs) both notched third place performances and Dominic Buterakos (113lbs) and Jameson Lutz (106lbs) each placed fourth all to earn spots at State.

Royal Valley Panthers had the second best area teams performance at Regionals finishing fifth of 16 schools with competitors. Bryce Golightley led the great Panther performances claiming the Regional championship at 145lbs by going 4-0 in competition with a sudden victory 3-1 in the title match. Four other Panthers will make the trip to State with Bryce after top four finishes in their weight classes.

Matthew Bailey (182lbs) took home second place going 3-1 in competition falling to Holton's, Mick in the title bout. Charles Tood (285lbs), Noah Hart (138lbs) and Chance Ogden (170lbs) took home third, fourth and fourth place finishes in their respective weight classes.

Fellow Big Seven school, Jeff West finished eighth place as a team at Regionals and saw four grapplers earn spots at the State competition. The number one wrestler in Class 4A at 285lbs all season Justin Scott was unbeaten going into the championship bout but was upset by Zeller of Holton and settle for second place to have the best Tiger performance on the day. Tucker Schreiner (120lbs) took home third place for the Tigers, while Jesse Best (145lbs) and Sam Shenk (195lbs) both took home a fourth place finishes.

The Atchison Redmen finished in the top 10 of team performances placing 10th, led by ranked grappler, Taylor Harris (170lbs) who claimed the Regional championship winning a tight decision in the championship bout 4-3, to finish the competition 4-0. His teammates, Andrew Adrian (113lbs) and Taylor Funk (285lbs) will join Harris at State after finishing third and fourth in their respective weight classes.

Perry Lecompton will also be sending a wrestler to the station competition as RJ Whitaker (182lbs) took home third place to qualify for State.
