Marysville & ACCHS Finish 1st & 2nd at Regionals, While Seven Other Schools Send Wrestlers to State in 3-2-1A

Area grapplers and their teams headlined the Sabetha 3-2-1A wrestling on Friday and Saturday as 29 wrestlers from nine area teams qualified for the 3-2-1A State wrestling competition at Fort Hays State University starting on Friday February 28th.

The day was headlined by Marysville and ACCHS who took home first and second place team finishes at Regionals finishing with 199.5 and 177 points respectively. While Sabetha and Onaga both had top 10 team finishes taking seventh and 10th place, respectively.

Marysville Bulldogs were led in the competition by a pair of Regional champs as Josh Nelson (160lbs), Christian Perez (120lbs) and Chris Deters (113lbs) both registered perfect records on the mats. Nelson posted a 5-0 record with a pair of pinfall wins and a 5-3 decision victory over Doniphan West's, Garret Dunlap in the championship bout. Perez posted a 4-0 record on the day with three pinfall wins to get to the championship bout which he won with a 5-4 decision. Deters made it back-to-back Regional championships for himself going 4-0 with three pinfall wins and a 2-0 decision win in the championship match.

Joe Smith (126lbs), Casey Hilton (220lbs) and Dylan Jones (145lbs) all took home second place for the Bulldogs all going 3-1, while Scott Kleinert (285lbs) placed third going 4-1 winning his final two matches to make it to State.

For ACCHS, ranked grappler Logan Bowen (132lbs) speared headed the great performances taking home the Regional championship by going 4-0. Bowen won his first three matches by pinfall to get to the championship match, which he won with an 11-5 decision. Fellow ranked grappler, Willy Dieckmann (138lbs) joined Bowen as a Regional champion going 4-0 with a pinfall win and three wins via decision including a 3-1 decision in the title bout.

Tigers top flight performances continued with Hunter Ostertag (106lbs) and Scott Birkinsha (170lbs) taking home second place going 3-1, while Jordan Herrman (113lbs), Justin Wagner (152lbs) and Kyle Chew (160lbs) all placed third for the Tigers. ACCHS grapplers, Jacob Handke (220lbs) and Bratten Forbes (285lbs) both will be headed to State, also as they both finished fourth place in their weight classes.

Sabetha, Pleasant Ridge, Troy, Doniphan West, Centralia, Onaga and Oskaloosa all are sending at least one wrestler to the 3-2-1A stat competition.

For the host Sabetha Bluejays they were led by Jacob Leuthold (285lbs) who took home a Regional championship going 4-0 with three pinfall wins and a bye, including winning the championship bout via pin, 4:19. His teammates Michael Baumgartner (170lbs) and Brandon Harrell (195lbs) will join Jacob at State after finishing third and fourth place, respectively with records of 4-1 and 3-2 in competition.

Pleasant Rigde will be represented at State by Logan McKinney (220lbs) and Blake Grahman (126lbs) who both took home third place finishes in their weight classes. McKinney and Grahman both posted 4-1 records in competition.

Number one grappler at 195lbs in 3-2-1A in Troy Trojan, Tristan Speer wrestled his way to a Regional title going 4-0 with four pinfall victories, including the championship bout win in 3:03. His teammates from Doniphan West in Garret Dunlap (160lbs) and Trevor Fee (170lbs) both who are ranked in the State will join Speer at the State competition after finishing second and fourth place in their weight classes, respectively.

Centralia's, Andrew Beck will make his return to the State tournament after taking home second place at 152lbs going 3-1 on the day. While his teammates from Onaga in Trenton Ross (120lbs), Kyle Ames (182lbs) and Dustin Blow (195lbs) are headed to State, also after taking fourth, third and second place, respectively at their weight classes.

Oskaloosa will be represented by Mark Nickels (120lbs) who placed third at Regionals to punch his ticket to the State competition.

Twenty eight area wrestlers continued their season over the weekend and will take to the mats again next Friday in Hays at Fort Hays State University.
