Though the original date of the game was supposed to take place earlier, Horton and Maur Hill Mount Academy couldn’t have met at a better time. Sure, every game is vital, but when substate placement and a potential Northeast Kansas League title is on the line, that provides an excellent mix for a great night of basketball. When it was all said and done, Horton moved in the right direction, with the girls and boys squads winning, 51-27 and 66-64 respectively.

Though the final score may not indicate it, but Maur Hill Mount Academy played Lady Raven basketball. MHMA didn’t allow a field goal in the opening quarter and led 9-2. Horton charged back in the second, but for the seventh straight game, Maur Hill Mount Academy had the lead at the half, up 16-15. In the third, Horton got in an offensive groove and scored nearly 20 points, up 33-20 going into the final quarter. The Lady Chargers followed up the third with another 18-point quarter and finished with a 51-27 victory.

Junior Sarah Coversup was the lone double-figure scorer, finishing with 16 point to be the Bank of Atchison Player of the Game. Sophomore Avery Lewman paced the Lady Ravens with six points.

Horton went to 11-4 on the season and 6-1 in the NEKL while Maur Hill Mount Academy fell back under .500 with a 7-8 record and 1-3 in the Northeast Kansas League.

Unlike the girls, the boys squad of Horton dominated the first quarter. The Chargers recorded 17 points and held the Ravens to just eight. Maur Hill Mount Academy responded with a 20-point quarter to knot up the game at 28-28 at the break. Both teams traded buckets in the third, but the Ravens had the slight advantage, up 44-43. It was a close contest in the first four minutes of the final quarter, but the Chargers built a seven-point lead late in the game to seal the 66-64 victory.

After having just two points in the first half, junior Trey Dishon responded with an 18-point second half, finishing with 20 to lead the Chargers. Senior Dakota Bayles and sophomore Alec Cowley added 14 points apiece. Freshman Nick Caudle exploded with 19 points off the bench to pace Maur Hill Mount Academy. Caudle played great defensively and added steals to earn the Bank of Atchison Player of the Game. Junior Dillon Kramer also chipped in 16 points.

The Horton Chargers are now 10-5 overall with a 6-1 Northeast Kansas League record. Horton might be battling for the first-ever NEKL crown next Friday at Valley Falls. For the Ravens, they dropped to 10-6 on the season and suffered their first league loss. Maur Hill Mount Academy is 3-1 in the league and takes on Valley Falls on Friday.
