Doniphan West Mustangs took to the mat on Saturday competing as the only area team at the Silver Lake Invitational notching seventh place out of 17 teams in action.

Mustangs finished just a half-point ahead of eighth place on the day but had all four of their wrestlers competing notch a sixth place or better performance.

Tristan Speer continued to spear head the top flight performances by the Mustangs as he registered a 4-0 day to win his 195lbs weight class. The number one wrestler in 3-2-1A received a bye in the opening round then followed that with three pinfall victories. In his first actual match Speer won with a pinfall in 1:44 then in the semifinals registered a 1:45 pinfall win. In the championship bout Tristan wrapped up the day with a pinfall win in 4:45.

Fellow Mustangs ranked wrestlers in Garrett Dunlap (160lbs) and Trevor Fee (170lbs) notched third and fifth place performances winning their final matches of the day. Dunlap who ranks third in his weight class posted a 4-1 record on the day for a third place performance. Garrett received a bye in the first round and then registered a technical fall win in 4:14, before losing a 7-4 decision in the semifinals. The sophomore, Dunlap finished the day going 2-0, winning the consolation semifinals with an 11-0 major decision and capturing third place with a pinfall win in 1:30.

Fee who ranks sixth in his weight class finished the day 3-2 in action claiming fifth place. Trevor started the day with a bye and 7-5 decision win, but fell in the semifinals by pin (5:02) and then in the consolation semifinals, too by 4-2 decision. In the fifth place contest Fee rebounded to finish the day with a win notching the 4-2 decision victory.

Kody Collins also competed on the day for the Mustangs and registered a sixth place performance at 145lbs going 3-3 on the day. Collins started the day with a pinfall win in 1:52, then fell in the quarterfinals by technical fall (3:41), but responded with a major decision 13-1 win and 7-5 decision in his next two bouts. Kody headed into the consolation semifinal and suffered his second loss of the day with a pinfall loss (4:13) and then fell in the fifth place game by Rule.

Overall a great day of competition for four Doniphan West grapplers all registering top six finishes at the Silver Lake Invitational.
