Nemaha Valley Claims Hiawatha Girls Invite Title for Second Straight Year (Full Final Day Recap)

Championship = Nemaha Valley won 49-35 over Marysville

For the second straight year the Lady Raiders of Nemaha Valley were crowned Hiawatha Invitational tournament championship this year taking down Marysville in the championship, 49-35. Lady Raiders propelled themselves past the Bulldogs for the second straight year in the tournament using the same game plan as the previous year in the semifinals, speed up Marysville and force turnovers with pressure defense and the Raiders forced 20+ turnovers in the game.

Nemaha Valley trailed 6-5 after the first quarter but used a 15-6 second quarter to take control and go on to notch the win with their stellar defensive showing. Junior, Jaci Swart paced the way with her best game of the season providing a big defensive presence on top of having her best game scoring with 21 points, while hitting 9-12 of her free throws. Sophomore, Rachel Baumgartner added 11 points on the night for the Raiders also in the win, helping the Raiders to a 10-3 on the season, their sixth straight win and sixth HIT tournament title.

Marysville in the loss was led by Abi Degenhardt who scored 16 points, while Tristan Wicks chipped in 11 points as the Bulldogs fell to 10-3 on the season and took second place at the tournament.

3rd Place = Horton won 40-31 over Falls City

It was a slow start out of the gate for both teams as Falls City lead the contest 4-0 into the final minutes of the first quarter but the Horton Chargers answered with a 5-0 run to cap off the quarter to lead by one after the first period. Horton went on to lead it 16-10 at the half and ultimately grab the 40-31 win for third place at this year’s HIT.

Falls City made a late push in the game but Horton stepped to the line made a few free throws and kept the Tigers at a distance to stave off the late Falls City surge. Chargers were led by Mariah Hisle who posted 16 points on the night helping Horton improve to 8-4 on the season and claim third place.

Tigers were led by Baylee Vrtiska who scored seven points as Falls City with the loss took fourth place and fell to 8-13 on the season.

5th Place = Rock Creek won 49-32 over Hiawatha

Hiawatha looking to cap off their home tournament with a win, never seemed to get into a groove throughout the game as the Rock Creek Mustangs got the best of the Red Hawks for a 49-32 win to earn fifth place.

Mustangs pushed out to a 14-10 lead after the first quarter, which stretched to a nine point margin at the half as Rock Creek led 29-20. Hiawatha’s struggles continued in the second half as Rock Creek closed the game out with a 9-2 fourth quarter to notch the win.

Rock Creek was led by Sarah Altenhofen in the win as she posted 15 points and Jacy Johnston chipped in 12 points for the Mustangs. Hiawatha in the loss was led by Emily Gartner who posted 19 points to continue her strong season for the Red Hawks as they fell to 5-8 on the year.

7th Place = Riverside won 51-47 over Jackson Heights

It was a whirlwind fourth quarter by the Riverside Cyclones as they showed true grit and battled back to earn their first win of the season topping Jackson Heights 51-47 for seventh place in the tourney.

Cyclones found themselves down 36-30 after three quarters of play but used a 21-11 fourth period to gain the victory as three players finished the contest with double figures. Jaden Cox paced Riverside with 14 points, while Erica Halter and MacKenzie Brewer each chipped in 10 points, helping the Cyclones move to 1-12 on the season.

Jackson Heights in the loss was led by Payton Thomas who scored 13 points, while Kaitlyn Strube added 12 points and Jessica Keehn scored 10 points. The Cobras with the loss fell to 4-10 on the season.
