McLouth Invitational Tournament Recap- Day One

At the MIT in McLouth, Kan., opened with two close games, one ending in dramatic fashion.

#4 Jefferson County North vs. #5 Riverside:
The JCN Chargers jumped out to a 32-27 lead at the half, but it was the third quarter that decided the game. Riverside scored 21 points and held on to win 60-56. Senior Alex Davidson led the Cyclones with 14 points and junior Andrae McGaughy chipped in 13. JCN’s Bryce Noll had a huge game with 30 points and junior Shawn Lane scored 17.
 
#3 McLouth vs. #6 Maranatha Christian Academy:
These two teams met on January 9th and both teams combined for 161 points. That didn’t change on Tuesday as McLouth had a 41-25 lead at halftime. Maranatha responded in the third to put the Eagles up 59-57 going into the final quarter. McLouth led 80-77 and junior Wyatt Hermann was fouled to go to the free throw line with four seconds left. Hermann missed both tries and Maranatha junior Mikey Brown grabbed the ball, launched it from 70 feet and drilled the prayer as the buzzer sounded to head into overtime. Both teams would trade buckets in OT and Maranatha had a chance to win at the end, but the Bulldogs pulled out a victory, winning 88-87. McLouth was led by junior Drew Cerny, who scored 18 points to be the Bank of Atchison Player of the Game. Senior Buck McAferty finished with 17 points, junior Nic Bair had 16, senior Dylan Dover recorded 14 and junior Jack Courtney chipped in 11 off the bench. For Maranatha, senior Endurance Crosby led with 26 points on his birthday. Sophomore Xavier Henderson scored 18 points, junior Jace Burdette had 16 and junior Mikey Brown recorded 10, including the 70-foot buzzer beater to force the game into overtime.
 
#2 Heritage Christian vs. #7 Oskaloosa:
The Oskaloosa Bears came out of the gate to lead 16-13 after the first quarter, but Heritage Christian bounced back with a 30-point quarter to lead it at the break. HC cruised to a 79-64 victory. The Chargers were led by seniors Stephen Tassy and Jack Feighner, who both scored 21 points. Oskaloosa senior Colby Harris recorded 17 points while junior Luis Rodriguez had 12 in the loss for the Bears.
 
#1 Valley Falls vs. #8 ACCHS:
At the start of the season, these two teams met. Both squads have improved, but the result was still the same. Valley Falls led 18-3 after the first quarter and cruised for a 67-17 victory over ACCHS. VF senior Max Badgett led all scorers with 17 points for the Dragons while senior Ben Gantz chipped in 10. Ten different players recorded two or more points for the Dragons. Bank of Atchison Player of the Game and ACCHS senior Quentan Reichart paced the Tigers with 11 points.
