At the 34th annual Raider Classic boys basketball tournament in Seneca, the top four seeds are won by double-digits in the opening round of Tuesday.
#1 Falls City 60, St. Mary's 35
The Tigers jumped to a 21-9 lead after one quarter and never looked back. Falls City made 10 three-pointers in the game and got 15 points from Jordy Stoller and 14 off the bench from Wade Witt improving to 14-1 on the season.
#4 Jackson Heights 64, Horton 53
The Cobras did not score in the first four minutes of the game and made five turnovers, but Horton could only muster a 7-0 start and 12-4 lead before Jackson Heights got rolling with a 9-2 run to take control in the second quarter and went to the half with a 34-24 advantage. Heights then started the third quarter on a 6-0 run and lead by double-digits the rest of the way improving to 10-2. Cameron Thomas scored 11 of his 19 points in the third frame while Preston Richter added 14, Cole Olberding 10 and Trevin Jacobsen 9 for the Cobras. Horton got 15 from Trey Dishon and Jordan Matthais, Josh Allen and Dakota Bayles 8 each before dropping to 6-3 on the season with a second loss to NEKL foe, Jackson Heights.
#3 Silver Lake 53, Marysville 41
The Eagles could not pull away from the pesky Bulldogs until the final quarter. Lake led 31-27 entering the fourth before improving to 8-1 on the season. Trenton Smith had 21 and DJ Redmond 17 for the Eagles. Garrett Kort had 12 to pace Marysville in the loss as they are now 2-8.
#2 Nemaha Valley 51, Hiawatha 33
It was a slow start for the three-time defending tournament champions and host as Nemaha Valley made only one field goal in the first quarter and trailed 8-5 after one quarter. Yet, the Raiders tied the game at 15 and ended the half on a 9-2 run to take a 22-15 lead at the half and not look back. NV won the third quarter 17-8 and got a balanced offensive attack with Justice McKernan scoring 10 and Evan Hermesch and Matt Haverkamp each adding 9. Caleb Meyer scored 8 points in the second quarter when the Raiders pulled away and improved to 9-1 on the season. Conner Bigham had 12 for Hiawatha but sit most of the second quarter with two fouls and the Hawks committed 16 turnovers on the night before faling to 2-8.
