It’s finally tournament time as teams take a break from league play to focus on bringing home some hardwood. On Monday night, three matchups took place at the Tonganoxie Invitational. The last game on the night featured Blue Valley Southwest and Atchison.

The BVSW Timberwolves wasted no time attacking the hoop and scoring as they started the game on an 8-0. Atchison sophomore Wykeen Gill Jr. recorded the team’s first points on a layup that resulted in a three-point play, but the Redmen struggled to make shots. BVSW led 19-7 after the first quarter. In the second, the Timberwolves continued to pounce on the Redmen as Blue Valley Southwest scored 20 points to go into halftime leading 39-16.

Atchison junior Rashaun Chambers sat primarily in the first half because of foul trouble, but he scored six straight points for the Redmen to start the third. Atchison continued to chip away at the Blue Valley Southwest lead and trailed 46-30 going into the final quarter. The Timberwolves shut the door early on any comeback and cruised to a 61-35 victory.

Blue Valley Southwest junior ER Steffy led all scorers with 16 points. Junior Stephen Anderson chipped in 14 and sophomore Matt Wilkinson finished with 10. For Atchison, sophomore Jerome Luster Jr. was the lone double-figure scorer with 10 points. The 5-6 guard had no fear grabbing rebounds as he recorded 10 rebounds to complete the double-double. Chambers was the next leading scorer with eight points.

BVSW moves on in the white pool to play DeSoto with a trip to the Tonganoxie Invitational championship on the line at 6 pm. The Atchison Redmen take on Holton at 4:30 and winner of that game moves to the fifth place game.
