TVL Basketball Tournament -- Quarterfinals Recap

Twin Valley League tournament continued at Washington County high school on Martin Luther King Monday and it was the quarterfinals up for the teams.

Girls

#9 Wetmore vs. #1 Washington County     (Washington County won 59-22)

The host school Washington County earned a spot in the semifinals for the third straight year as they look to win the TVL tournament for the fourth straight year, by taking down Wetmore 59-22 in the quarterfinals. Tigers pounced on the Cardinals early with a 15-2 first quarter and lead 25-14 at intermission. Washington County continued to pad their lead with a 17-4 third quarter and was led by Erin Alexanders who posted 19 points earning Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA, while Heidi Stegman chipped in 11 points, improving the Tigers to 11-0 on the season as the Tigers will now play Thursday night in the semifinals. Wetmore with the loss fell to 4-7 on the year with Brianna Boden leading the way with nine points and now will play in the consolation bracket.

#5 Axtell vs. #4 Linn    (Axtell won 43-39 in OT) 

The Axtell lady Eagles got the best of Linn earlier in the regular season winning by double figures, but this time it wasn't so easy for Axtell as they needed overtime to pick up the 43-39 win to earn a spot in the semifinals against Washington County. Axtell led 16-12 at the half but Linn battled back to force overtime, but Axtell won overtime 11-7 for the win. Courtney Heinen paced the Eagles with 13 points, while Megan Buessing chipped in 12 points to help the Eagles improve to 9-3 on the season. Linn was led by Nicole Ohlde who scored 13 points but fell to 7-3 on the season with the loss and move to the consolation bracket.

#6 Centralia vs. #3 Baileyville-B&B      (B&B won 58-53)

It was a tight competition down to the wire but the B&B Falcons moved on to the semifinals with a 58-53 win over Centralia, in a game that featured 13 three-pointers between the two teams. Falcons flew out to a12-6 lead after the first quarter, but Centralia battled back to tie the game at 28-28 at the half. In the second half the three-point show by senior, Laura Sudbeck continued as she hit five three's in the game to pace B&B with 19 points on the night. The senior guard tandem of Katie Huerter and Ashley Kramer posted 12 and 15 points, respectively earning the Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA together, as they helped B&B move to the semifinals and improve to 9-1 on the season. Centralia in the loss was led by Kaitlyn Koch who posted 14 points and Cassidy Haufler chipped in 11 as the Panthers fell to 6-4 on the season and move to the consolation bracket.

#10 Hanover vs. #2 Valley Heights      (Valley Heights won 55-45)

A quick start out of the gate by the Valley Heights lady Mustangs shot them off to the 55-45 win over Hanover earning a spot in the semifinals. Mustangs took an early 18-8 lead after the first quarter and never looked back from that point on as that proved to be the margin of victory for Valley Heights. Mustangs with the win moved to 9-1 on the season, as they were led by Brandi Roepke who posted 19 points and Sidney Blackburn scored 17 points. Hanover Wildcat, Paige Doebele continued her strong showing at the TVL tourney with a 15 point performance going 10-11 from the free throw line, but Hanover fell to 4-7 on the season with the loss.

Boys

#8 Axtell vs. #1 Valley Heights    (Valley Heights won 56-44) 

It was a rapid start to the game for the Valley Heights Mustangs as they quick worked out to a 15-2 advantage in the first quarter against Axtell and never relinquished the lead in the game despite Axtell's comeback tries the Mustangs won 56-44. Axtell closed to within eight after the first quarter, 20-12 and it was 30-24 at the half. Ultimately down the stretch it was Valley Heights coming up with the closing plays to secure the game stretching the lead out as Bennett Bargdill led the charge with 14 points, including going 11-14 from the free throw line, earning him the Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Derek Trimble chipped in 12 points, while Charles Musil scored 13 points, as Valley Heights improved to 9-1 on the season and moved to the semifinals. Axtell in the loss was led by Payton Heinen who posted 23 points, but Axtell fell to 7-5 on the season and move to the consolation bracket.

#5 Hanover vs. #4 Baileyville-B&B     (Hanover won 58-53)

A fast start by the Hanover Wildcats proved to be to much for the B&B Falcons to overcome in the TVL quarterfinals showdown as Hanover picked up the 58-53 win to move to the semifinals. Wildcats worked out to a 12-4 lead after the first quarter and 25-15 at the half, but the Falcons pushed back into it ultimately falling short. Hanover was led by Will Bruna who posted 16 points, Andrew Bruna scored 13 points and Hunter Nicholson scored 10 points, helping Hanover move to 8-3 on the season. B&B in the loss fell to 6-4 and was led by Luke Holthaus who scored 20 points, while Dustin Rottinghaus posted 15 points, as B&B moves to the consolation bracket.

#6 Troy vs. #3 Centralia     (Centralia won 62-32)

It was all Panthers as they pounced on Troy early and never trailed in the competition as Centralia lead 17-7 after the first quarter and held 39-17 lead at half. Trojans struggled finding a groove on offense going 2-12 from three-point in the matchup while Centralia found a groove early on offense as Cody Huerter and Brett Burdiek tallied a combined 26 points in the first half alone. Huerter finished the game with 16 points on the night earning the Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA, while Burdiek added 16 points himself on the evening. Panthers overall on offense finished the night with nine different players posting points to help Centralia move to 8-2 on the year and move on to the semifinals. Troy was led by William Boeh off the bench with eight points and fell to 7-4 on the year and to the consolation bracket in the tournament.

#7 Linn vs. #2 Onaga     (Linn won 39-37)

The Linn Bulldogs pulled off the only big upset of the day via the seeds taking down the two seed, Onaga with a 39-37 win holding on for the victory as the Bulldogs lead by five late, but Onaga hit a three at the end of the game to draw within two. Linn closed out the game behind clutch free throws to stave off Onaga just enough down the stretch despite multiple opportunities in the game Onaga just fell short. The Buffalos all to 6-3 on the season with the loss and were led by Jarod Gronewoller who scored 15 points and Lucas Helget chipped in 10 points. Linn moves on to the semifinals with their win improving to 7-3 on the season, as Josh Meyer led the Bulldogs with 14 points in the win.
