TVL Basketball Tournament -- Day 1 Recap

The 2013 Twin Valley League tournament got underway on Saturday and there was plenty of action on the hardwood at Washington County high school where this year’s TVL tournament is being hosted. Saturday's action is recapped below.

TVL Tournament brackets --- Girls     Boys

Girls

#9 Wetmore vs. #8 Troy     (Wetmore won 38-37)

The eight versus nine battle proved to be just that a battle to the end with neither team fully taking control of the game throughout the close, as Wetmore held on the for the 38-37 win over Troy to move on. Teams traded the lead in the first half with Troy clinging to a 18-17 lead at the half but Wetmore used a 13-9 third quarter to push to a lead that they clung to in the final seconds of the game to notch the win. Troy in the loss was led by Kaylee Bennett who tallied 14 points, while Breanna Smith and Holly Whetstine each added 10 point. Wetmore was led by Brianna Boden who posted nine points, while Keri Pfrang chipped in eight. Wetmore now plays #1 seed Washington County on Monday (game will be on 92.1 KMZA) and Troy will play in the consolation games starting Tuesday night.

#12 Onaga vs. #5 Axtell     (Axtell won 67-30)

Axtell Eagles flew by the Onaga Buffalos in the five versus 12 seed matchup in the opening round as it was 12-10 early until Axtell went on a run to end the first quarter and lead 23-10 after the first period. Eagles continued to build their lead pushing it to 20 points at the half and used a 21-8 third quarter to secure the 67-30 win. Axtell was led by Kiersten Talbot posted 16 points, Courtney Heinen added 15 points and Taylor Feldkamp added 11 points. Onaga in the loss was led by Rebekah Glessner who posted 10 points; the loss sends Onaga to the consolation games starting Tuesday. Axtell advances on to the quarterfinals playing #4 seed Linn who won their game.

#13 Frankfort vs. #4 Linn     (Linn won 44-31) 

Frankfort looking for an upset in the tournament worked out to an early 9-6 lead after the first quarter as the 13 seed led the four seed Linn. But Linn used a 16-4 second quarter to take control of the game and never relinquish the lead earning the 44-31 win. Linn in the matchup was led to the victory by Kesiah Thalmann who posted 16 points, while Nicole Ohlde scored 12 points helping the Bulldogs move to the quarterfinals where they will play five seed Axtell. Frankfort in the loss was led by senior, Arianna Martin who scored 10 points and Ashley Joseph added nine points, as Frankfort with the loss will play in the consolation games starting Tuesday.

#14 Blue Valley-Randolph vs. #3 Baileyville-B&B       (B&B won 59-30) 

A quick start and crushing third quarter by the B&B Lady Falcons propelled them to an easily opening round win over Blue Valley-Randolph as the Falcons won 59-30. B&B started the contest with an 18-9 first quarter and then put together a 22-9 third quarter with many subs in the competition. Falcons were led by Katie Huerter and Cassidy Hulsing who each tallied 11 points, while Laura Sudbeck and Ashley Schmitz each chipped in 10 points. B&B with the win moves to the quarterfinals and takes on Centralia who won their first round contest. Blue Valley in the loss was led by Megan Plummer who scored eight points; the Rams will play in the consolation games starting Tuesday night.

#11 Clifton-Clyde vs. #6 Centralia      (Centralia won 54-15)

Centralia Lady Panthers clamped down on the defensive end and cruised past Clifton-Clyde 54-15 in the six versus 11 seed first round matchup. Panthers worked out to an 11-6 lead after the first quarter, but them held the Eagles to three points in the next two frames with a 15-3 second quarter and 19-3 third quarter. Centralia in the win was led by Cassidy Haufler who scored 13 points, while eight other Panthers scored in the contest moving Centralia to the quarterfinals on Monday against B&B (game will be on 92.1 KMZA). Clifton-Clyde in the loss was led by Bethany Morgan who tallied six points and will play in the consolation games starting Tuesday.

#10 Hanover vs. #7 Doniphan West     (Hanover won 52-43)

It was the second time on the day the lower seed in the girl’s competition would get the first round win as it was the only true upset in the matchup via seeding of the first round of the TVL tourney. Hanover lead by six at the half, 19-13 and continued to stave off Doniphan West in the second half to notch the 52-43 win. Hanover was led by Paige Doebele who scored 20 points, while Shelby Bruna chipped in 14 points for the Wildcats moving them into a matchup against the #2 seed Valley Heights in the quarterfinals on Monday.

Boys

#9 Washington County vs. #8 Axtell     (Axtell won 43-38) 

Two teams with an identical record meet up in the eight versus nine matchup in the first round of the boys TVL tourney and it went down to the wire with Axtell using a strong 14-9 fourth quarter to gain the 43-38 win. Washington County lead 12-7 after the first quarter and held the 21-20 lead at the half despite a 13-9 second quarter by Axtell. Eagles found themselves down again in the second half behind the strong play of Andrew Feldkamp pushed to take the lead late and earn the win; Feldkamp led Axtell with 11 points while Christian Buessing added 11, too. Kyle McGatlin led Washington County with 17 points in the loss, as the Tigers will play in the consolation games. Axtell with the win plays #1 seed Valley Heights in the quarterfinals on Monday (game will be on 92.1 KMZA).

#12 Wetmore vs. #5 Hanover     (Hanover won 82-56)

Hanover Wildcats size proved to be too much for the Wetmore Cardinals to get an upset in the first round as Hanover won 82-56. Only a three point game after the first quarter, Hanover took control of the game behind a 26-14 second quarter and finished the game off with a 23-14 fourth quarter. Wildcats were led by the post play of Ethan Fritschi who posted 17 points, while Wade Steinfort and Will Bruna chipped in 14 points and Andrew Bruna added 10. Wetmore in the loss saw Andy Henry lead the way with 15 points and Jermey Hoelscher added 13 points. Wetmore will be in the consolation games starting Tuesday, while Hanover moves into the quarterfinals to play B&B who won their first round game.

#13 Frankfort vs. #3 Baileyville-B&B     (B&B won 45-33)

A quick start by the B&B Falcons gave them a comfortable 10-point lead early that Frankfort was never able to overcome, as the Falcons lead 19-9 after the first quarter and went on to grab the 45-33 win. Sophomore, Luke Holthaus continued his strong play as of recent leading the Falcons with 13 points, while Dylan Schmitz chipped 11 points. Frankfort in the loss was led by Lucas Adams who scored 12 points, while Adam Koch and Brett Kenworthy each scored seven points. B&B with the win moves to the quarterfinals to play Hanover, while Frankfort will play in the consolation games starting on Tuesday night.

#14 Blue Valley-Randolph vs. #3 Centralia     (Centralia won 51-33)

After starting off slow in the game, trailing 12-6 after the first quarter the Centralia Panthers put together 17-4 second quarter and a 15-6 third quarter to push to a 51-33 win over Blue Valley-Randolph. Seniors, Cody Huerter and Sam Steinlage paced the way for Centralia as they each posted 12 points apiece. Blue Valley in the loss was led by their big man Kyle Appley who scored 10 points, as the Rams will now play in the consolation games of the TVL tourney. Centralia with the win moves to the quarterfinals for another year and will play newcomer to the TVL, Troy in the quarterfinals on Monday (game will be on 92.1 KMZA and 103.9 KNZA).

#11 Clifton-Clyde vs. #6 Troy    (Troy won 59-56 in OT)

A strong start to the game by the Troy Trojans gave them what looked to be a comfortable lead as they lead 14-2 after the first quarter and 28-17 at the half, but that lead evaporated in the second half. Clifton-Clyde fought back in the second half to force overtime but down the stretch Troy made a few free throws and made the game winning plays to secure the 59-56 win in overtime. Collin Jasper led Troy with 19 points, while Nathan Gaarder added 15 points to move Troy into the quarterfinals as they will play Centralia on Monday (game will be on 92.1 KMZA and 103.9 KNZA). Clifton-Clyde in the loss was led by Caleb Gelino who tallied 23 points, while William Ohlde chipped in 10 points, as the Eagles will play in the consolation games.

#10 Doniphan West vs. #7 Linn    (Linn won 59-36) 

A strong first half by the Linn Bulldogs and their size pushed them to a 56-36 win over Doniphan West in the first round. Linn lead 19-2 after the first quarter and stretched that lead out with a12-9 second quarter. Bulldogs were led by a trio in double figures with Brett Peters pacing the way with 15 points, while Conner Duensing added 12 points and Josh Meyer chipped in 11 points. Doniphan West in the loss was led by Jeffery Watts and Cooper Leach who both  scored 13 points, as the Mustangs will now play in the consolation games in the tourney. Linn moves to the quarterfinals were they will play the #2 seed Onaga on Monday.
