Girls - Horton 47, Hiawatha 43

Boys - Horton 38, Hiawatha 37

The Horton girls never trailed jumping to a 10-4 lead in the opening quarter and streching it to 22-12 at halftime.  The Lady Chargers were ahead 37-24 entering the fourth quarter and was barely able to hold on for the win.  Horton was able to take advantage of a team size and experience advantage as Hiawatha started two freshman on varsity and played five frosh regularly in the contest.  That lead to 24 turnovers for the Hawks, but 17 in the first half proved to be too many to overcome.  Hiawatha got back in the game hitting four treys in the third quarter.  WIth both teams struggling mightily from the free throw line, Horton could not put the game away, but the Redhawks missed two open trifecta's and also missed their final four foul-shots in the closing minutes of the game.  Horton had 18 turnovers themselves and was only 15 of 35 at the charity stripe while Amber Wilhelm led the way with 13 points and earned "Player to Bank On" honors from the Citizens State Bank and Trust Company in Hiawatha.  Mariah Hisle chipped in 10 points and Loagan Rodvelt scored 7 in the last frame while Keeley Cowley scored 8 as the Chargers and Coach Ken Shippy started 1-0.  Sophomore, Emily Gartner led Hiawatha with 10 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter while freshman, Courtney Brockoff posted 12 points and Emily Bauer hit a couple treys to score 6.

The boys game was tight throughout with the biggest lead a 15-7 Hiawatha advantage in the second quarter.  The Redhawks started the game with a 6-0 lead as Horton went nearly 5 minutes without a point.  The Chargers took their first lead 29-28 with just under 7 minutes left in the game and Chandler Knudson hit a trey to make it 32-32 with 4:30 left.  The key play was a Trey Dishon steal of an inbounds pass after a Hiawatha timeout, and hit went to the other end with a layup to put Horton up 38-34.  Hiawatha got a three-pointer from Ryker Smith and then fouled with :05 left and the Chargers missed both free throws.  Yet, the Redhawks turned over the basketball in the closing seconds and suffered the loss with 15 turnovers and only 2 of 6 at the line.  Conner Bigham had 12 before fouling out and Nicholas Reese added 8 of the Redhawks bench.  Horton, who had lost twice to Hiawatha by four points last year, got revenge and a huge from "Player to Bank On," Trey Dishon who scored 13 of his game-high 20 points in the second half.  Dakota Bayles added 7 and Alex Cowley had 6 as the Chargers were 9 of 23 from the stripe and had to play without point-guard Derrick Stone (illness) and also lost senior starter, Josh Allen to an ankle injury in the first half.
