Maur Hill Mount Academy and Troy split exciting season opener

One game ended in overtime. The other wasn’t decided until the final minute. It was a fantastic start to the 2013-14 basketball campaign with Troy and Maur Hill Mount Academy battling to begin the year with a victory.

In girls competition, defense highlighted the contest as both teams held each other to low scoring. After the first half, Troy and Maur Hill Mount Academy were tied at 15-15. In the third quarter, both teams combined for four points and put the score at 17-17. Multiple lead changes summarized the first seven minutes of the final quarter, but with 40 seconds left, sophomore guard Carly Taylor drilled a three to break the tie to give Maur Hill Mount Academy a 28-25 lead. Troy immediately attacked the rim, but after the missed shot, sophomore guard Avery Lewman stepped to the free throw line and buried a pair of free throws to seal the victory for the Lady Ravens, winning 30-25.
 
Taylor led all scorers with nine points for the Lady Ravens, seven points coming in the second half. Her performance made her our Bank of Atchison Player to Bank on. Kaitlyn Miller finished with seven, Avery Lewman had six and Kendra Brull and Becca Funk had four points apiece.
 
For the Lady Trojans, junior guard Alex Winder recorded three three-pointers to finish with nine. Breanna Smith and Alanie Stock recorded four points, Kaylee Bennett and Josie Smith had three and Holly Whetstine had two.
 
Scoring wasn’t an issue for Maur Hill Mount Academy and Troy in the boys game. The Trojans led 39-33 heading into the fourth quarter. With 11 seconds on the clock trailing by two, the Ravens worked the ball around the perimeter and junior Cole Siebenmorgan attacked the hoop and converted at the buzzer to send the game into overtime, tied at 49-49. Troy junior guard Collin Jasper made a three and a pair of free throws to help the Trojans get a three-point advantage. The Ravens had a shot at the buzzer, but didn’t make it, losing in overtime 58-55.
 
The Bank of Atchison player of the game was MHMA’s Dillon Kramer. The junior scored 21 points and led all scorers. Thomas Zhou and Mark McDermed each had 10, Cole Siebenmorgan and Tobin Kocour recorded five and Jake Schmidt finished with four.
 
For Troy, all but three points were scored by the starters. Collin Jasper and junior Tristan Speer both had 17 points. Jake Ross recorded 12, Nathan Gaarder with nine and William Boeh scored three points.
 
Maur Hill Mount Academy plays tonight at Riverside while Troy battles Doniphan West.
