Sabetha lady Bluejays took flight one last time on the tennis courts this year as four lady Bluejays competed at the 3-2-1A State competition in Pratt over past weekend.

Already a stellar season on the tennis court for the Bluejays they capped it off with a fifth place finish in doubles competition by Amy Wysong and Ellie Montgomery, a 12th place finish in the singles competition by Lexi Wenger, a solid performance by Alexa Menold in singles competition and a fourth place team performance overall.

The senior tandem of Wysong and Montgomery came in their final State competition looking to improve upon their sixth place finish from last year and that they did by one spot taking home a fifth place finish with a 4-1 record at the State competition to finish the year 31-4 on the season. Amy and Ellie opened up competition playing their first match in the second round on the winner's bracket side and earned a 6-3, 6-0 win over a team from Beloit. In the next round senior tandem suffered their lone loss of the State tournament falling to the eventual second place team from Wichita-Independent (6-3, 6-2).

With that loss that moved Amy and Ellie to the consolation bracket side, where they would not lose again winning three straight matches to capture a fifth place finish in their senior year. They picked up 9-2 win over team from Haven and then a tough 9-7 win over a tandem from Central Plains, to put them in the fifth place match. In the fifth place competition the Bluejays tandem took on a team from Marysville and cruised to a 9-1 win capturing their best finish at State in their career.

In the singles competition both Lexi Wenger and Alexa Menold qualified for the 3-2-1A State tournament for the Bluejays and it was Wenger highlighting the performances for Sabetha earning a 12th place performance.

Lexi opened up the tournament with a first round win 6-2, 6-0 taking down a competitor from Chaparral; the sophomore then fell in her second match 6-1, 6-1 loss to a competitor from Hoisington who finished fifth. Wenger went on to finish 3-4 at State, starting with a 9-0 and 9-3 wins over competitors from Ashland and Hoisington to continue on in the consolation bracket, but then suffered her second loss of the day falling 9-1 to a player from Wichita Collegiate. The sophomore finished the day falling 9-2 and then 9-4 in the 11th place match to cap of the day with a 12th place finish.

For the junior, Alexas Menold her State tournament ended with a 1-2 record; after falling in a tough three set opening round match 0-6, 6-3, 10-5, Menold responded to win 9-7 in her second match of the day, but fell 9-3 in her next match to end her State tournament.

One of the best years in Sabetha girl’s tennis history was capped off in impressive fashion with a fifth place and 12th place performance at the State tourney.
