At the beginning of the year the Holton lady Wildcats golf team set their sights on a trip to the State tournament and that they earned with a third place Regionals finish last week.

The lady Wildcats will take the course one more time this season looking to cap off a stellar season, when they hit the course at Crestwood Country Club in Pittsburg, KS for the Class 4A State tournament.

Coach Dennis Tegethoff after the team qualified for the State tournament at Regionals talked about how the girls set that as a goal starting last year to make the State tourney as a team and they were excited to do so.

"I'm real proud of the girls, probably even more excited for them. That was one of their goals when we started the season, actually even last year; those girl's really wanted to get an opportunity to play at the State tournament as a team and so it was a real exciting day for those girls," said Coach Tegethoff.

It's been a balanced mix on the Wildcats squad that had lead the charge to their top flight performances on the year as the team is led by a pair of seniors in Kyrstie Miller and Sam Herring, who finished sixth and 11th at Regionals to lead the Wildcats.

"Kyrstie and Sam, they've been great leaders for us. There both excited about this opportunity and both been pretty consistent all year," said Coach Tegethoff.

Miller, has been to the State tournament the last two years placing 20th last year and second as a sophomore, will look to help lead her team at the State tournament.

The rest of the roster around the two seniors, consists of four juniors, three sophomores and a freshman. Finishing off the team performance as Regionals was sophomore, Anne Bowser, junior, Hannah Deegan, and sophomore's, Maddie Foster and Quinn Holaday. Bowser took home 13th, while Deegan 22nd place and Foster was right behind with a 23rd place. Holaday was just two-strokes out of the top 25 for the Wildcats. Both Holaday and Deegan had to finish Regional action in the rain battling through it cap off great performances.

Coach Tegethoff, has noticed the progress of his team all season, saying the team made steady progress from the start to the finish of the season, despite the scores at Regionals being lower than normal as the weather played a factor.

Wildcats are excited and ready to go for the State tournament and Coach Tegethoff said there was one word to best describe how the girls felt about making the State competition, that word "giddy."

"There a fun bunch of girl's to be around; to see the excitement on their face of Monday after it was pretty much decided and the couple of days of practice, you know their real excited about this. I don't even know if their anymore excited about it than what their parents are, cause their pretty excited for them, too. They've been a real fun group to be around and for them to get this opportunity is a real enjoyable thing for a coach, that's for sure," said Coach Tegethoff.

The girls take the course for the final time this season in the Class 4A State tournament in Pittsburg on Monday with tee times starting at 8:30am in the competition. The Wildcats have tee times of 8:30am (Bowser), 8:40am (Herring), 9:30am (Miller & Foster), 9:20am (Deegan) and 9:40am (Holaday).
