Volleyball teams across Kansas focus on sub-state matchups as the regular season is coming to a close. Many area teams didn’t have to travel far as the squads spent the day at the Atchison Invitational.
The host squad played great in pool play, exiting without a scratch as the Lady Red picked up wins over Pleasant Ridge, Immaculata, Shawnee Mission East and Maur Hill Mount Academy. Immaculata only finished with one win, but Coach Wendy Sachen thought the team played extremely hard and is starting to get back into the groove. Maur Hill Mount Academy struggled, but with junior varsity players being mixed in, the squad is looking to gel right before sub-state.
Horton notched two victories after beating Oskaloosa and KC Christian, but lost to Perry Lecompton and Marantha. Oskloosa had a tough outing, but came very close to a victory.
Atchison was the only area team to advance to bracket play and after sitting around for a few hours because some games were behind schedule, the Lady Red lost to eventual champions Marantha. Shawnee Mission East faced Atchison again for third place and after winning the first set, SME fell to Atchison to take fourth.
