For the second straight week, Mother Nature decided to interrupt football in northeast Kansas. Jefferson County North and McLouth both were playing an even game before lightning delayed the game with McLouth leading 14-7 with 10:28 left in the second quarter.

After waiting nearly two hours, both teams returned to the field, but the McLouth Bulldogs used its scrappy defense and speedy offense to coast to a 50-7 victory over Jefferson County North.

The Chargers received the football to start the game and drove down the field. JCN used 16 plays to get to the one-yard line. Facing a fourth and goal, sophomore quarterback Bryce Noll lobbed the pigskin to senior tight end Luke Pyle to cap off the opening drive that wasted over nine minutes of clock.

McLouth didn’t waste much time to respond, as the Bulldogs only used five plays to find the endzone. Senior runningback Drew Cerny ran past the goal line from 17 yards out to give the Bulldogs an 8-7 lead with 27 seconds left in the first.

After a JCN muffed punt, McLouth got the ball inside the 20 yard line for its second offensive drive and Cerny scored again, this time on a 15-yard touchdown rush to give McLouth a seven-point advantage.

Offensively for the Bulldogs, Drew Cerny finished with 119 yards and two touchdowns. McLouth primarily was in the wildcat and senior wideout/halfback Nick McAferty ran it to perfection, recording 100 yards on the ground and nabbing a 23-yard reception. McAferty recorded two rushing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown to earn the Bank of Atchison Player of the Game. Junior quarterback Jack Courtney only threw one time and that resulted in a touchdown. For the second week in a row, the defense was stout, holding the Chargers to just 128 total yards, 115 of them coming in the first half.

For Jefferson County North, Bryce Noll completed six of his 13 passing attempts for 71 yards and a touchdown. Luke Pyle had two receptions for nine yards and a touchdown while senior wideout Aaron Meckfessel recorded two catches for 42 yards.

McLouth goes to 1-0 in district play and improved to 4-2 on the year and hosts Oskaloosa this Friday. Jefferson County North falls to 1-1 in districts and plays Jackson Heights.
