Northeast Kansas area touts some of the top volleyball teams across the state and some of the toughest volleyball competition across the state, also and teams from three area leagues Big Seven, Northeast Kansas League and Twin Valley League converge in Hiawatha to square off in volleyball action on Saturday (September 21st).
Just like last year it was the Twin Valley League powers in the B&B Falcons and Centralia Panthers highlighting the competition both winning their respective pools going 4-0 in competition and then ultimately meeting up in the championship game again this year with B&B coming out on top this season over Centralia in three sets, 15-25, 25-19 and 25-16.
The Falcons took down Atchison in the semifinals, while the Panthers beat Jefferson County North in their semifinal competition after both the lady Red and Chargers took second in their pools to advance into the semifinals. Both matches went straight sets as B&B beat Atchison 25-13, 25-20 and Centralia took care of JCN 25-20, 27-25. That meet JCN and Atchison would play for third after losses in the semifinals and JCN got the best of Atchison in three sets, 23-25, 25-11 and 25-18 to take home third place.
In pool play action it was highlighted by the play of course of the final four teams on the day but field plenty of solid matches during the day with only four of the 20 matches in pool play going three sets.
The Red pool housed the eventual Hiawatha Invite champs the B&B Falcons went a perfect 4-0 beating Hiawatha, Immaculata and Doniphan West all in straight sets and took down JCN in three sets. The Chargers took second in the pool behind wins over Hiawatha, Doniphan West and Immaculata; winning two of the three in straight sets and needing three sets to beat Immaculata. Immaculata would wrap up their day with a 2-2 record in pool play action beating Hiawatha and Doniphan West; the match with Hiawatha going three sets. Hiawatha did grab one win on the day beating Doniphan West in pool play action to end the day 1-3, while the Mustangs went 0-4.
In the Blue pool, it was the Centralia Panthers going 4-0 to win the pool beating Horton, Maur Hill-Mount Academy, Troy and Atchison all in straight sets. The closest matchup the Panthers had came against the Horton Chargers who played a couple of close sets with Centralia (25-23 & 29-27). The Lady Red of Atchison went 3-1 in pool play action with straight set wins over Horton, Troy and Maur Hill-Mount Academy. The Horton Chargers finished the day with a 2-2 record notching wins over Troy and Maur Hill getting both in straight sets. While, Troy and Maur Hill played the only three set match in the blue pool with the Trojans grabbing the win to finish 1-3 in action and Maur Hill went 0-4 on the day.
As the volleyball season has hit full stride teams turn their attention again back to league play in the upcoming week as the Northeast Kansas area continues to showcase some of the top volleyball action across the state.
