Two overtime games and snapping an 18 game losing streak were week one highlights for Big 7 League football on Friday night.  Santa Fe Trail won for just the third time in 60 games and notched their initial Big 7 League win with a come from behind 28-22 overtime victory at Royal Valley.  Meanwhile, Hiawatha survived a scare and made a comeback themselves at home to escape Perry Lecompton 14-13 in overtime.  Elsewhere, Jeff West had the best offensive night with a 47-21 victory at Sabetha and Riverside, Nemaha Valley and Holton all notched non-league wins in week one.

For Santa Fe Trail, they scored the game tying touchdown and two-point-conversion with only 4:27 left in the fourth quarter at Hoyt.  Then, they stopped Royal Valley on fourth and inches to begin overtime and won the contest with a 14 yard pass from Weston Gloss to Cody Vandevord.

Tyler Mundy finished with six catches for 134 yards and 3 touchdowns, including a 75 yard TD catch for the only Charger score in the first half.  Gloss hit 9 of 14 passes of the night.

Zach Rottinghaus had 3 catches for 48 yards and a touchdown for Royal Valley and Michael Bailey had a big night on the ground with 24 carries for 161 yards and a score that put RV up 22-16 in the fourth quarter.

As if the loss wasn't enough, Royal Valley also took a huge hit when returning starting quarterback Austin Hodison left the game with a knee injury in the first half.  Sophomore, Zach Lux finished the game for the Panthers under center.  Royal Valley ended up with twice as many first down (16-8) and twice as much rushing yards (240-121).  But the 198 passing for Gloss and SFT was the difference.  Royal Valley also had 10 penalties.

In Hiawatha, the Redhawks trailed the entire night. After Perry Lecompton scored on the first overtime possesion a bad snap on the PAT try led to Hiawatha blocking the kick.  Then on the Hawks first play in overtime, Brendan Steele ran for his second touchdown of the game and Conner Bigham nailed to PAT for a 14-13 Hiawatha win.   New quarterback Ryker Smith was 6 of 14 for 127 yards passing for Hiawatha while RJ Whitaker led the Kaws with 126 yards on 19 carries and a score.

Riverside defeated Doniphan West 26-6 as Andrae McGaughy had 125 yards rushing and 139 passing while accounting for 3 Cyclone touchdowns.  Drew Hoffman added 105 yards on 20 carries while Colton Munger led five receivers with 54 yards on 5 catches.  Riverside overcame a trio of turnovers but only had one penalty in week one win and Zach Halter had 10 tackles to lead the defense.

Doniphan West got their only score on a 30 yard touchdown pass from Tynan Bollinger to Cooper Leach in the fourth quarter.
