Doniphan County Legion Makes it 4-straight Wins Topping Hiawatha in Tight Battle

Finding a groove on the diamond seems to be something the Doniphan County Legion team as done in their last few games as they extended their winning streak to four-straight games last night dispatching Hiawatha at home in a tight battle.

The fireworks in the game didn't really come about until late in the contest as Doniphan County needed three runs in the bottom of the seventh to come from behind to earn the 8-7 win.

Nine of the 15 runs scored in the game came in the sixth and seventh by both teams, as Doniphan County went into the sixth leading Hiawatha 4-2. In the top of the sixth Hiawatha took back the lead by plating three runs being aided by two errors by Doniphan County, a walk and a single. Down one, Doniphan County tied the game up at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth and then Hiawatha again scored plating two runs in the top of the seventh. This time Hiawatha used a lead-off double by Dakota Bayles, a triple by Taylor Jacobsen and two singles to score their runs.

Needing two runs to keep the game going and three to win it at home, Doniphan County took to the plate and used three walks, a triple and single to take home the 8-7 win.

Doniphan County got the job done offensively with two-hit nights by Caleb Winkel, Cody Israel, Phoenix Keller and Quenton Munger. For Hiawatha in the loss Bayles led the way with a 3-4 night, while Jacobsen went 2-4 with three runs scored.

With the loss Hiawatha falls to 4-15 on the year and will travel to Marysville for a double header on Friday playing at 6:00 and 8:00pm.

While, Doniphan County with the win extended their winning-streak to four straight and improves to 12-9 on the season and next turn their attention to Nebraska/Kansas Border Battle tournament in Falls City. Tournament starts Saturday and Doniphan County will play in the Kansas pool with Sabetha and Holton; Doniphan Counties game times will be 5:30 and 7:30pm.
