Sabetha Baseball Advances to 3A Regional Finals

The defending 3A State Champs won their first two home Regional games on Tuesday at Somerset Park with a pair of 10-run victories against Pleasant Ridge and Hiawatha.  The Bluejays await the winner of a suspended game with undefeated and top seed MH-MA ahead of Nemaha Central by a score of 5-3, and will play in the championship game Thursday at 5:00 PM.  

Sabetha scored early and often against Pleasant Ridge in the opening round as Gabe Garber tossed a one-hitter and Joe Gruber ended the game in the fifth inning with a three-run homer to make it 11-1.  Garber added a two-run double the inning before as Sabetha got production from their entire lineup while improving to 16-3 on the season.  

Hiawatha 3, Marysville 1

The sixth seed Hiawatha pulled off a first round Regional upset for the second year in a row as Michael Moreno tossed a two-hitter and didn't allowe an earned run.  Moreno retired the first 14 batters he faced before a runner reached on an error and scored after a single and wild pitch in the fifth inning.  Moreno struck out five and didn't allow a free pas while Jace Grubb, Andrew Lierz and Gabe Corbett all had two hits.  Corbett untied the game at one with an RBI triple in the sixth frame and scored his second run of the contest on a sac fly by Hunter Pavlish to improve the Redhawk record to 8-10.  Marysville saved their top pitcher and had only three base runners before ending their season with a 13-4 record.  

Sabetha 11, Hiawatha 1

Freshman Jalen Worthley tossed a one-hit shutout with four walks and four strikeouts in five innings of the semifinal.  Kamden Brownlee opened the scoring with a leadoff home run in the second inning and finished with a pair of hits, runs and RBI.  Sabetha led 4-0 in the fourth inning before Drew Schmelzle cleared the bases with a three-run triple and Braden Argabright ended the night with a two-run triple in the fifth.  Argabright finished 2-2 with a pair of runs and RBI while Garber added two hits and runs.
