Plenty of NEK legion baseball action took place over the weekend while some games were cancelled and reschedule, also.

On Friday, Hiawatha and Atchison moved around their game, moving their double header to Monday July 1st, but still squaring off for just a single game on the night. In a tight contest that saw leads for both teams, late offense by Atchison pushed them to an 11-7 win.

Sabetha was also in action on Friday night in a highly contested contest with non-league member Marysville. It was a pitcher’s duel through the contest with Sabetha picking up a pair of runs in the sixth to grab a 2-1 win.

On Saturday, Seneca traveled to Holton for a league double header and Seneca poured out the runs and offense like they have multiple times this year notching 17-3 and 18-3 wins. The Doniphan County at Royal Valley matchup scheduled for Saturday was rescheduled for July 19th.

Sunday, saw Seneca in action again this time playing host to Atchison in a league double header. After cruising to a 10-0 win in game one Seneca had a battle on their hands in game two with Atchison a strike away from the win Seneca got the favor of a questionable call and used it to mount the comeback and steal the 8-7 win for the double header sweep.

Doniphan County took on Auburn in action over the weekend for their lone matchup and fell 10-2 in the non-league contest. Royal Valley and Frankfort scheduled double header for Sunday was cancelled.

Friday June 28th:

Sabetha Uses Late Marysville Mistakes to Grab Win at Home

Sabetha used a pair of late runs to push past Marysville in a non-league showdown that was a pitcher’s duel on Friday night.

Both teams managed minimal offense with Marysville starting pitcher, Cody Ketter giving up only three hits to Sabetha and Kyle Stallbaumer, Sabetha's starter only allowing a pair of infield hits in the first inning.

In the sixth Sabetha capitalized upon a pair of walks, a catcher's balk and an error and plated the game tying run and winning run, also.

Marysville looked to try and spring some offense with a lead-off walk in the top of the seventh, but Graham Howard came in to shut down Marysville, earn the save and preserve the Sabetha win.

Sabetha improved to 19-7 on the season with the win and look to a double header matchup with Doniphan County on Monday at Wathena. Marysville with the loss fell to 11-5 on the season.

Calhoon’s strong pitching outing breaks Atchison’s losing streak

It was a long week for the A’s. Losing big to Sabetha, blowing a lead in a close game against Doniphan County and playing without usual players were all highlights of a tough week.

Pitcher Cody Calhoon made sure to end the week on a high note though, pitching the full game in an 11-7 victory over Hiawatha on Friday to break a two-game losing streak.

Hiawatha jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning after two RBI-singles by centerfielder Dakota Bayles and third baseman Shawn Green. The A’s responded with two runs in the second off one hit, tying the game at 3-3.

Locked up at 4-4 going into the bottom of the fourth, Atchison catcher Lane Fry blasted a ball over a Hiawatha outfielder’s head. Fry drove in three runs and safely reached third base in a five-run inning.

Hiawatha threatened with a late-game rally, but Atchison shut the door with a run in the sixth to lead 11-7 heading into the final inning.

Calhoon was impressive, striking out 12 and walking two in a complete game performance. Offensively, Calhoon added an RBI single. Fry went 1-4 with an three-RBI triple. Second baseman Jake Schmidt also went 2-2 with a triple and a single.

Centerfielder Dakota Bayles went 3-4 in the losing efforts for Hiawatha.

Seneca Remains Unbeaten in League Play with Sweep of Atchison

After a sweep on Saturday Seneca returned home to continue league play as they hosted Atchison in a double header and the Seneca offense continued to score, as Seneca earned the sweep but the second game ended in a bit of controversy.

In game one Seneca cruised to a 10-0 win over Atchison but it was game two that was the story of the night.

Up 7-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Seneca had two on with two outs and down to their final strike when the Seneca batter worked the count and then blasted a two RBI double to tie the game. Still alive Seneca went on to plate the winning run via a throwing error and stole the 8-7 win.

With the sweep of Atchison, Seneca improved to 18-2 on the season and 12-0 in the league and will next be in action on Wednesday when they host Sabetha in a league double header at 6:00 and 8:00pm (first will be broadcasted on Kanzaland radio -- both 103.9 KNZA & 92.1 KMZA). Atchison with the losses fall to 6-9 on the season and turn their attention to a road trip up to Hiawatha for a league double header on Monday at 6:00 and 8:00pm.
