24 Area HS Basketball Stars Earn KBCA Announces All Class Honors

With another basketball season fully behind us and many publications already announcing their postseason All-Class awards, the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association have know released their All-Class honors this year and 24 area athletes earned honors from Class 4A and under.

In Class 4A, it was a four area girls earning All-Class honors with three hailing from the Big Seven and the other the KCA league. Holton junior, Kyrstie Miller lead the way with first team All-Class honors, while her teammate senior, Connor Strader earned second team honors. Miller and Strader helped the Wildcats 21-2 season this year with their losses coming to state champion, Wamego. Holton continued their dominance in the Big Seven winning the league for the eight straight year. Miller filled the state sheet for Holton with a stat line of 11.5 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 4.9 spg, 1.8 apg and 1 bpg, while Strader posted 7.9 ppg, 3.1 apg and 2.7 spg.

Santa Fe Trail Charger, Shelby Dahl also took home second team All-Class honors after helping the Chargers to a 17-5 record this year while posting 10.1 ppg (second on the team), 5 rpg, 2.8 apg and 3.4 spg. Atchison's, Madison Sanders was the other area player to earn All-Class honors, getting honorable mention honors after helping the Lady Red to the KCA league title this season.

In Class 3A, the Big Seven league highlighted area honorees with the DVL and NCKL getting the nod for a couple of All-Class players, also. The Nemaha Valley Raiders, lead the way with the honors for the area as senior, Creighton Brinker took home first team All-Class honors and senior, Trent Olberding and sophomore, Jaci Swart each grabbed honorable mention honors. Brinker and Olberding finished their Raider career with a third place finish in Class 3A at State as the Raiders were 24-2 on the year, while also winning a share of the Big Seven title for second straight year. Brinker lead the Big Seven in ppg and bpg, 14.9 ppg and 3.1 bpg while adding 7.7 rpg. His teammate, Olberding posted 12.1 ppg and shot 50% from the floor this year and 37% from three-point land. Sophomore, Jaci Swart helped pace the lady Raiders to a 14-9 season and regular season Hiawatha tournament win this year.

Another Big Seven school in Sabetha had a pair of All-Class 3A honorees both on the girls side as senior, Ashley Annan earned first team honors and freshman, Alexis McAfee garnered honorable mention honors. Annan and McAfee helped the lady Bluejays to the state tournament this season, finishing the year 17-7. Annan lead the Big Seven in scoring with 14.1 ppg and lead the league in field goal percentage, 58.4% ,while also getting 9.4 rpg. McAfee chipped in 11.5 ppg and 3.1 apg on the season as a young star.

ACCHS, also had a pair of athletes earned All-Class honors with seniors, Allison Wallisch and Jacob Hansen each earning honorable mention All-Class 3A honors. Wallisch helped the lad Tigers to a 19-3 record this season, while posting 13.8 ppg, 9.6 rpg, 2.6 spg and 1 spg, as she will continue her basketball career at Johnson County CC next year. Hansen helpd the Tigers boys squad take home the DVL title for the second year, as the Tigers finished the regular season unbeaten and capped off the season with a 22-1 record. Hansen posted a stat line of 13.8 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 3 apg, 2.9 spg and 1.6 bpg this season.

The lone other 3A area honoree was Abi Degenhardt of Marysville who earned honorable mention All-Class honors after helping the lady Bulldogs to a 14-8 record this past year.

Class 2A, All-Class honors for area players has a heavy Charger flavor as three of the four players earning postseason honors from the KBCA hail from Jefferson County North. Leading the way with All-Class honors was junior, Jacee Kramer who earned first team honors, while her teammate, junior, Jamie Navinskey took home second team honors. Kramer and Navinskey both helped the lady Chargers to another state tournament this season following a state title the previous the Chargers finished as state runner ups this season, with a 23-3 record. Kramer posted nearly 600 points this season tallying 26 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 4.3 rpg, 4.3 spg and 3.5 apg this season, while earning All-State honors by some publications; Navinskey added double figures all season, also.

Senior, Jacob GrandPre on the boys side took home honorable mention honors as the only area boys basketball player in 2A to earn All-Class honors. GrandPre helpd the Chargers to a 17-7 record this season for the second straight year a state tournament appearance.

Megan Stegman of Washington County, also earned honorable mention All-Class 2A honors after helping the lady Tigers to a 20-2 record this season and for the second straight just one win shy of the state tournament.

In Class 1A, eight area athletes earned All-Class honors with six being on the boys side of the honors. Frankfort, B&B and Valley Heights each had a pair of honorees while Axtell and Centralia each had one player earn All-Class honors.

A pair of juniors in Axtell Eagle, Payton Heinen and Centralia Panther, Sam Steinlage both took home second team All-Class honors after great runs this season for their respective teams. For Heinen, he posted 15.2 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 3.4 bpg, 1.9 apg and 1.2 spg this season helping the Eagles capture the Class 1A-Division II state title with a 19-8 record on the year. Steinlage lead the Panthers to their second straight appearance in the Class 1A-Division I state tournament this year taking home a third place finish, capping off a 20-6 season. Steinlage touted a stat line of 15.1 ppg and 7.2 rpg for the Panthers this year.

For the Wildcats of Frankfort both seniors, Calahan Brown and Alex Surdez earned third team and honorable All-Class 1A honors. Both, Brown and Surdez posted double figures on a consistent basis for the Wildcats as they finished 14-8 on the season, one year after winning the state title.

Both, B&B and Valley Heights each had a girl and boy earn All-Class honors in 1A by KBCA. For the Falcons it was junior, Luara Sudbeck leading the way earning third team honors after helping the lady Falcons to a 20-4 record this season and an appearance in the state tournament, while averaging a double-double, 16.1 ppg and 10.1 rpg. Senoir, Curtis Stallbaumer on the boys side earned honorable mention honors after helping the Falcons win the TVL with a 16-6 record while posting 10 ppg and 7 rpg this season.

Valley Heights had junior, Charles Musil and freshman, Brandi Roepke both earning honorable mention All-Class honors in 1A by KBCA. Musil helped the Mustangs challenge in the TVL this season as they finished towards the top of the league with a 14-8 record this season with Musil posting multiple double figure games this season. Roepke proved to be a dominant force for the lady Mustangs this season as they finished 18-5 on the year winning the TVL regular season crown, behind a multitude of 20-plus point games at the hands of Roepke.

Another great basketball season in the books and the Kanzaland area saw great basketball yet again with many great players earning postseason honors.
